Vance Named ECC Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week

2/17/2020 5:12:00 PM

AMHERST, N.Y. - Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.) of Daemen College has been named the East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week for matches played February 10-16. The official announcement was made this afternoon with the release of the ECC's weekly sport report

Vance compiled a perfect 3-0 record during Daemen's matches against Medaille College and Mercyhurst University this past weekend. His efforts helped the Wildcats earn a split of the two contests - their first of the spring semester. Daemen downed new Western New York rival Medaille 7-2 in the first-ever meeting between the two, and fell to Mercyhurst 6-1.

Vance earned wins in both singles and doubles play - the first of his collegiate career - in the match against Medaille. He teamed with senior James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.) in the No. 2 doubles position to defeat Matthew Burke and Jonny Pitts of the Mavericks without dropping a game (8-0). He did the same in singles play, ousting Pitts 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 position.

Vance went on to earn Daemen's lone point against Mercyhurst. Again appearing in the No. 4 singles position, Vance downed MU's Kiran Richards 6-4, 6-2.

Vance is the fifth player from Daemen to earn ECC Rookie of the Week honors since the Wildcats joined the league for the 2013-14 season. He's the first recipient since Tim Georg during the 2017-18 season.

Daemen returns to action with a pair of home matches this week as they welcome Alfred University (Friday, Feb. 21) and the State University of New York at Oswego (Saturday, Feb. 22) to Miller Tennis Center.
