Top 10 Moments of 2019-20: Boyar Sets Career Goals Benchmark

7/24/2020 10:00:00 AM

AMHERST, N.Y. - On Wednesdays and Fridays this summer, daemenwildcats.com will feature stories that look back upon the top 10 moments of the 2019-20 season. Record-setting performances, important wins and history-making achievements will be documented in the series.

THE MOMENT:

Boyar sets career goals benchmark
When senior forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) opened the 2019 season with 10 goals in the first five games, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that she would end her career as the leading goal-scorer in the history of the Daemen women's soccer program. Boyar, who set the program's single season goals record with 20 during the 2018 season, entered her final collegiate campaign with 37 goals, 17 shy of the career benchmark (54) set by Daemen Hall of Famer Kim Walker from 2003-06.

But, opposing defenses adjusted and limited the standout forward to five goals over Daemen's next 10 games. With 15 goals through as many games, she was cemented as one of the top goal scorers in the country, let alone the East Coast Conference, but the benchmark moment still hadn't come.

All signs pointed to the Wildcats' game Nov. 2 vs. Lincoln (Pa.) as the day it could happen. With Boyar sitting on 52 career tallies and Lincoln surrendering nine goals per game, she'd have a chance to breakthrough on "Senior Day" - the final home game of her career. She scored the game's first goal at the 8:12 mark, pulling within one of Walker's record. But that's all she would get in an otherwise joyous 7-0 win - the Wildcats' 10th of the season.

With Daemen's postseason fate very much in question, the only guaranteed opportunity for Boyar to break the record would come Nov. 9 in the regular season finale at St. Thomas Aquinas. She did just that, scoring a pair of goals - her 14th career multi-goal game - to lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory. Boyar put the Wildcats on the board and matched Walker's benchmark just 4:21 into the contest, scoring off a feed from fellow senior Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont.). The record-breaking goal, the 55th of her career, would come unassisted at the 27:11 mark. It would also go down as the 19th game-winning goal of her career.

While the Wildcats would go on to make their first-ever NCAA tournament berth later that November, Boyar finished the 2019 season with 18 goals, ranking second in the ECC and 12th in Division II. She's the only player in program history with at least 18 goals in two different seasons.

A four-time team MVP, three-time All-ECC selection, two-time All-East Region honoree and two-time Daemen Female Athlete of the Year, Boyar's legacy won't soon be forgotten on Main Street. In addition to her goals record, she's one of three players in team history to surpass 100 career points, finishing second with 121 (Walker, 132). Her career goal total ranked fourth among all Division II players who competed during the 2019 season. Perhaps the most telling numbers of Boyar's career are exhibited in her affect on the Wildcats' win-loss records. Daemen went 26-7-2 in games that Boyar scored, including a perfect 14-0 in multi-goal games. Boyar was also recently named Daemen's nominee for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award in recognition of her achievements in athletics, academics, leadership and community service.
