Wildcats Halt Edinboro's Winning Streak

Daemen now with six wins in their last seven matches

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen women's volleyball team scored arguably their biggest win of the season tonight as they knocked off surging Edinboro 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24) in non-conference action at Lumsden Gymnasium.

The Wildcats have now won six of their last seven matches, improving to 10-6 this season. The last three of those victories have come at home where the Wildcats are 24-9 since the start of the 2018 season. Edinboro, which entered tonight riding an eight-match winning streak, tasted defeat for just the second time this season as they dropped to 12-2.

It also marked just the second win for Daemen in the all-time series with Edinboro, and their first since 2012. The Fighting Scots had won 10 of the 11 lifetime meetings before tonight. Tonight's match was the first between the teams since 2015.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Senior Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) led the Wildcats tonight and totaled a match-high 13 kills to go with 12 digs. It marked her second double-double of the season and the ninth of her career.
  • Sophomore Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) was strong out of the middle as she powered down 11 kills while committing just one hitting error. With a .625 hitting percentage tonight, it marked her third match this season at .600 or better.
  • Grad student Cailtyn Meyer (Clarence, N.Y.) chipped in 10 kills and 10 digs. She's now reached double figure kills in 14 of 16 matches this season.
  • Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) recorded her 10th double-double in the last 12 matches. She handled setting duties for the Wildcats once again, and totaled 36 assists and 14 digs.
  • Sophomore Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) had a match-high 19 digs to pace the Daemen defense.
  • Sally Sterkel was the lone Edinboro player to reach double-figure kills, finishing with 13. Alicia Eldredge contributed 29 assists and Carly Pry tossed in a team-high 15 digs.

THE TURNING POINT
Daemen put themselves on the precipice of a sweep by taking the first two sets. The Wildcats put down 15 kills in the opening frame, and 10 more in the second. But, Edinboro got back into the match with 13 kills in the third, while limiting Daemen to just eight and a .000 hitting percentage in the set.

As Edinboro built a 19-13 lead in the fourth, the match appeared destined for a fifth set. Daemen battled back, cutting the deficit to just two (19-17) following a pair of Logan kills and another by Alessi.

Edinboro got it back to a four-point advantage when a Daemen attack error gave them a 22-18 lead. Again Daemen wouldn't go away. A kill by Kuliga sparked a 3-0 spurt. With Edinboro leading 23-21, Daemen got some timely hitting as Logan, Meyer and Kuliga all put down kills, giving the Wildcats their first lead since it was 6-5. Edinboro forced extra points by knotting the match, but the Wildcats got the next two, securing the set and the match on a kill by Meyer.
