Lewin Scores Twice in Daemen's 4-1 Win Over D'Youville

Three second-half goals lead Wildcats back to .500

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Great things happen when nobody seeks the credit.

In what was their first contest in seven days, Daemen men's soccer certainly shared the wealth offensively as part of a solid two-way performance Saturday afternoon.

Behind three different goal-scorers, including a multi-goal performance from junior forward Christian Lewin (Bobenheim-Roxheim, Germany), the Wildcats kicked off their slate of East Coast Conference contests with a 4-1 victory over D'Youville in a contest held at Dobson Field.

With the victory, Daemen men's soccer returns to .500 at 2-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in East Coast Conference play. With the loss, D'Youville drops to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in ECC play.

 HIGHLIGHTS
  • After over 35 scoreless minutes to start the contest, Lewin received a pass from freshman midfielder Vincent Ranieri (Spencerport, N.Y.) and found the back of the net in the 36th minute to give Daemen a 1-0 lead. On the play, Ranieri recorded his second assist of the season.
  • The Saints responded roughly two minutes when, in the 39th minute, ECC-leading goal scorer Nick Dumond recorded his 12th goal of the season off an assist from senior defender Jake Kowalewski. Through the end of this contest, the Lockport native currently leads the ECC in goals, assists (4) and total points (28.) Daemen and D'Youville were tied at 1-1 at halftime.
  • Daemen then found scoring opportunities in the second half. In the 51st minute, redshirt senior and midfielder Anthony Cupello received a pass from fellow veteran Derek Mancuso (Friendship, N.Y.) and gave Daemen the go-ahead 2-1 lead. The scoring then continued in the 74th minute when Lewin recorded his second goal of the day off a crossing feed from Chris Cox (Buffalo, N.Y.). Trey Buscaglia (East Amherst, N.Y.) then recorded his second goal of the season in the 87th minute with an assist credited to Pontus Lundin (Asmundtorp, Sweden) to close the afternoon's scoring.
  • While D'Youville outshot Daemen in the contest, 17-16, both teams recorded six shots on goal each. The Saints out-edged the Wildcats in corner kicks, 9-8.
  • Along with the two goals, Lewin led all Daemen players in shots on goal (2.) Buscaglia, Cupello, Carlos Espana (Madrid, Spain) and Michel Holscher (Hamminkeln, Germany) all recorded a shot apiece.
  • Senior goalkeeper Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) was in net for a fourth consecutive start for the Wildcats and recorded four saves in the victory. Today marked the seventh start and third victory of his Daemen career.

GAME NOTES
  • With the victory, Daemen has now won five of their last seven contests dating back to rattling off three straight victories to conclude their COVID-19 abbreviated slate in spring 2021.
  • Today was Daemen's first four-goal outing as a program since a 4-0 season-finale victory versus St. Thomas Aquinas on Oct. 27, 2018 at Williamsville South High School. This was also the second time Daemen has scored multiple goals in a contest this season (2-1 victory at Malone on Sept. 4.)
  • Today was Daemen's first contest since a 1-0 loss at Slippery Rock on Sept. 11. Daemen was scheduled to face Le Moyne on Sept. 15 in non-conference play before the game was postponed.
  • By scoring in the 36th and 74th minutes, Lewin recorded his first multi-goal performance of his Daemen career. Heading into the contest, Lewin was looking for his first goal since facing the same D'Youville program on April 30, 2021 (2-0 victory.) Lewin has now recorded five career goals and has appeared in 22 contests.
  • By scoring in the 51st minute, Cupello scored his first goal while wearing the blue-and-white since Daemen's 3-1 road loss at Lock Haven on this exact date in 2018 (Sept. 18.) This was also the fourth goal of his Wildcat career.
  • Since scoring in the 80th minute in a 4-2 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on March 27, 2021, Daemen has now outscored their opponents, 14-6.
  • Today was the fifth all-time meeting between the '716' programs and their first-ever meeting as ECC opponents. Daemen leads the all-time series, 5-0, with four of those victories earned at Dobson Field.
  • Today marked the fourth of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6.
