The Wildcats totaled 45 kills and limited the Skyhawks to just a .007 hitting percentage - the lowest for any Daemen opponent this season. The victory evens Daemen's record at 5-5 this season. All five Daemen wins have come on Saturdays. Stonehill, which was picked to finish fifth in the Northeast-10 Conference this season, dropped to 5-5. The Skyhawks were playing their second match of the day after dispatching of perennial NCAA tournament contender New Haven in four sets earlier. IMPACT PLAYERS Graduate student Caitlyn Meyer (Clarence, N.Y.) led a balanced Wildcat offense, finishing with 10 kills on a .292 hitting percentage. Meyer has now posted 10+ kills in nine of 10 matches this season, including the last eight in a row. Junior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.), sophomore middle blocker Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) and freshman right side Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) were also major contributors for the Wildcats. Burns had one of her strongest matches of the season, finishing with nine kills and a season-high 18 digs. Kuliga added eight kills and a career-high six blocks, and is now averaging 2.52 kills per set over the last five matches. Ryan matched her season-high with eight kills and added a season-best four blocks. Sophomores Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) and Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) split time at setter today and posted 17 assists apiece. Alessi added 11 digs for her sixth consecutive double-double. In addition to the defensive contributions of Burns and Alessi, sophomore Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted 15 digs and junior Mickaley Monahan (Saline, Mich.) tossed in 11. Abby Remick and Basia Peragine were the only hitters to see much success for the Skyhawks, finishing with 12 and seven kills, respectively. Carly Russell recorded a match-high 31 digs to pace the Stonehill defense. THE TURNING POINT After splitting the first two sets and engaging in a back-and-forth tussle over the first 21 points of the pivotal third set, Daemen firmly seized control. The Wildcats used a match-altering 14-4 spurt to run away from the Skyhawks. Stonehill committed seven attack errors, two service errors, two bad sets and a ball handling error, allowing Daemen to win the set with only two kills in the latter stages. The Skyahwks never fully recovered as Daemen opened up a 15-6 advantage in the fourth, breezing to the set and match victories. Daemen's trademark depth was on display as they got kills from six different players in the set. It was their best offensive set of the match as they put down 15 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. TOURNAMENT NOTES The Redhawks Tournament is the last of three season-opening tournaments for the Wildcats. Daemen previously participated in the Warrior Invitational (hosted by Wayne State) and the Cavalier Invitational (hosted by Walsh). All three of Daemen's opponents this weekend are members of the Northeast-10 Conference, and each was picked to finish in the top five of that league this season. Today's match marked the first-ever meeting between the Wildcats and Skyhawks. UP NEXT The Wildcats open East Coast Conference play next Saturday, Sept. 25 when they visit Queens (N.Y.) for a 12 p.m. match.
