Wildcats Sweep Knights In ECC Opener

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Daemen women's volleyball team has been playing some nail biters of late, but that was not the case this afternoon as the Wildcats cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-11, 25-14, 25-17) over host Queens at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. It marked the first East Coast Conference match for both the Wildcats and Knights since 2019. 

Daemen improved to 6-5 overall this season. The Wildcats have won two straight and four of their last six, while Queens (1-9, 0-1 ECC) dropped their seventh consecutive match. 

The Wildcats are now 5-3 all-time in ECC season openers, winning five of their last six. 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Nine of the 14 Daemen players who saw action registered at least one kill, led by freshman right side Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) who put down a season-high nine. Ryan was one of four players to record a team-high six digs as well.
  • Junior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) joined Ryan as the only players with at least 10 attack attempts. She produced seven kills and a .545 hitting percentage.
  • Junior middle blocker Loren Alberts (Huntley, Ill.) chipped in five kills and a team-high three blocks.
  • Sophomore setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) posted a match-high 19 assists and added six digs.
  • Jordan Martin (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y. added six digs to the Wildcats' defensive cause. 
  • Graduate student Caitlyn Meyer (Clarence, N.Y.), the ECC leader in kills, played in just one set today and had two kills. 

THE TURNING POINT
Daemen opened up a 17-8 lead in the first set and never looked back. The Wildcats posted double-figure kills in all three sets, including 14 in the first and second. Queens managed 17 kills in the entire match, and was limited to just a .048 hitting percentage. 

MATCH NOTES
  • Daemen improved to 11-5 all-time vs. Queens. The Wildcats have won five straight in the series.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats visit the preseason ECC favorite Molloy for an 11 a.m. match tomorrow, followed by a non-conference bout with Southern Connecticut State.
