NORTH CANTON, OHIO – For the first time in nearly two years, Daemen men's soccer is back playing in the familiar months of September, October and November.
After having their 2020 schedule postponed to this past spring due to COVID-19 protocols, the Wildcats officially kicked off their 2021 campaign Thursday night against former rival, Walsh, but left searching for their first win of the new season.
In the first game of his Cavalier career, freshman Jac Humphreys recorded an unassisted goal in the 78th minute to lift Walsh to a 2-1 victory over Daemen in a contest held at Larry Staudt Field.
With the loss tonight, Daemen men's soccer dropped to 0-1-0 to kick off the 2021 campaign while Walsh moves to 1-0-0 overall.
HIGHLIGHTS
- After finishing this past spring tied for the team in goals, sophomore Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) picked up right where he had finished mere months ago. The forward scored his first goal of the new season in the 35th minute and gave Daemen a 1-0 lead. This is also Montero Guerrero's third goal of his career with the blue-and-white. The Cavaliers quickly responded as sophomore forward Harry Gardner connected off a pass from junior midfielder Jake Cunningham in the 41st minute to tie the score at 1-1 at the break. Despite corner kicks and opportunities within striking distance, neither team found the back of the net again until Humphreys recorded his unassisted goal in the 78th minute.
- Walsh outshot Daemen, 18-11, including nine shots on goal, in the contest. Daemen, however, outedged the Cavaliers in corner kicks, 6-5.
- Montero Guerrero and teammates Hilario Munoz (Málaga, Spain), Trey Buscaglia (East Amherst, N.Y.) and Colin Archibald (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) all recorded one shot on goal each for Daemen.
- Senior goaltender Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) made his first start of the season and recorded seven saves in the contest. Tonight marked the fourth start of his Daemen career.
GAME NOTES
- With the loss, Daemen was prevented from winning their fourth game in a row coming off winning their final three contests of their COVID-19 abbreviated slate in Spring 2021. A victory tonight would have marked the first time the Wildcats reached this milestone since they accomplished the feat in a span dating from Oct. 23 – Nov. 4, 2006.
- The three victories in Spring 2021 were the most Daemen recorded in a single season since the 2018 campaign (5-12 overall.)
- Tonight was the first time Daemen allowed multiple goals in a contest since a 4-2 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on March 27, 2021. Since a goal against the Redhawks in the 80th minute by Montero Guerrero, Daemen has outscored their opponents, 8-3.
- Tonight was the 17th all-time meeting between Daemen and Walsh since the series began in September 2000 as former rivals in the Northeast Atlantic Conference. Walsh now holds an all-time 16-1 record against the Wildcats and are 9-0 at Larry Staudt Field. This was also the first meeting between the programs since Sept. 7, 2019.
- Tonight marked the first of a traditional 16-game schedule which runs through November 6.
