CANTON, OHIO – Poise, poise, poise.
For Daemen men's soccer, that was the key word in their Saturday afternoon contest against Malone in the Buckeye State. And when game-changing plays were needed, the Wildcats succeeded thanks to the cohesiveness of a veteran group.
First half goals from veterans
Derek Bartlo (Williamsville, N.Y.) and
Trey Buscaglia (East Amherst, N.Y.) and a strong defensive presence in the final minutes of the contest contributed to Daemen's 2-1 victory over Malone in a contest held at Pioneer Park. This marked Daemen's first victory in the series since a 1-0 road win versus the Pioneers on Sept. 1, 2018.
With the victory, Daemen men's soccer improves to 1-1-0 to conclude the first weekend of the 2021 campaign while Malone falls to 0-2-0 overall.
HIGHLIGHTS
- After a tough defensive battle with limited shots on goal for both team, Daemen struck first. In the 23rd minute, junior midfielder Derek Bartlo (Williamsville, N.Y.) connected off a pass from classmate Trey Buscaglia (East Amherst, N.Y.) to give Daemen a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 27th minute, Buscaglia found the back of the net himself after receiving a pass from freshman midfielder Vincent Ranieri (Spencerport, N.Y.) to extend Daemen's lead 2-0 through the halftime break. Malone wouldn't go down without a fight, though, as junior midfielder Antoine Leheron found freshman midfielder Gavin Csiszar in front of the net in the 71st minute to cut Daemen's lead in half, 2-1. The Daemen defensive unit went to work, however, in the final 19 minutes of regulation to secure their first win of the 2021 campaign.
- Daemen outshot Malone overall in the contest, 14-12, but the Pioneers won the battle in shots on goal, 5-4. Malone also outedged Daemen, 2-1, in corner kicks.
- Along with Buscaglia and Bartlo, teammates Derek Mancuso (Friendship, N.Y.) and Dennis Montero Guerrero (Weingarten, Germany) also recorded a shot on goal apiece for Daemen.
- Senior goaltender Marcos Lerma Escobar (Zaragoza, Spain) made his second start of the season and recorded four saves in the contest. Tonight marked the fifth start of his Daemen career.
