ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – After a three-set sweep against Queens College the day before, the Daemen women's volleyball team continued their road trip in Quealy Gymnasium on the campus of Molloy College Sunday afternoon. As part of a tri-match event with the host and ECC preseason favorites Lions and Southern Connecticut State, the Wildcats came away with a split before heading back to Main Street.
In back-to-back contests, the Wildcats defeated the Lions in three straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 28-26) to start the day.
Then, in the second match, Daemen built a 1-0 lead before the Owls recovered to take the next three sets, including a hard-fought fourth set, for the 3-1 victory (25-21, 18-25, 22-25, 35-37.)
With the split today, Daemen's record is now 7-6 overall on the season and 2-0 in ECC play.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Senior Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) recorded 31 kills today, including 18 vs. Southern Conn. State to establish a new season-high. Logan also recorded a .353 hitting percentage in Daemen's loss to the Owls.
- Sophomore middle blocker Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) and junior Loren Alberts (Huntley, Ill.) combined for 25 kills against the Lions and Owls. Kuliga posted a .308 hitting percentage against the Lions while Alberts posted a .385 percentage against the Owls.
- Graduate student Caitlyn Meyer (Clarence, N.Y.) totaled a combined 20 kills in the two matches. She's now posted 10+ kills in 11 of 13 matches this season.
- Sophomore Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted a combined 88 assists and 22 digs over the two matches Sunday. She recorded a match-high 52 assists against Southern Conn. State along with 14 digs. Against Molloy, she posted 36 assists and 8 digs.
- Sophomore Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) recorded 13 digs vs. Molloy and 19 more vs. Southern Conn. State. Brundage has now reached double-digits for digs in 11 of Daemen's 13 contests this season.
- Junior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) recorded a combined 18 digs Sunday afternoon.
- Kathleen Doherty finished with 12 kills and 6 digs to lead Molloy. Graciela Cruz finished with 10 kills and Kassie Akouri Tejedor added team-highs in assists (28) and digs (11.)
- Gabriela Vazquez finished with 15 kills to lead Southern Conn. State. Gabriela Gaibur had 13 kills and 15 digs and Taylor Jones had a team-high 40 assists plus 10 digs.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE VS. MOLLOY
- Molloy built an early 8-4 lead in the opening set before the Wildcats responded with a 7-3 run tie the set at 11-11. With the score then tied again at 13 apiece, timely kills and blocks from Logan, Meyer and Burns helped the Wildcats pull away with the first set victory, 25-19.
- A kill from Logan in the second set tied the score up at eight, which was enough for Daemen. Behinds kills from Burns, Meyer and Alessi, the Wildcats had a lead as large as eight points (23-15) and won the second set, 25-17.
- Molloy came out roaring in the third set, building up a 16-11 lead over the Wildcats. Two Molloy attack errors and a kill each by Burns and Alberts brought Daemen within one point (16-15.) Molloy tried to extend their lead but the Wildcats kept the set a one-point game four more times before a kill from Burns tied the score at 23 all. After three score ties, the Wildcats completed the three-set sweep following a Molloy attacking error and a kill from Logan, 28-26.
- Daemen won the statistical battles in kills (45 - 36), hitting percentage (.261 - .170), assists (42 - 36), service aces (6 - 2) and digs (49-46.)
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE VS. SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE
- Fresh off their match against Molloy roughly 30 minutes earlier, Daemen built off this momentum to take the first set against Southern Conn. State. The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-6 lead before a rally by the Owls tied the score at 10-10. After a series of eight score ties (18-18), the Owls had a 21-19 lead. Kills by Meyer and Burns and errors by SCSU helped the Wildcats end the set on a 6-0 run for a 25-21 victory.
- The teams stayed within two points of each other in the second set before the Owls went on a stretch to build an 18-12 lead. The closest Daemen would get to the Owls in this set was after a Molloy attack error to cut the deficit to 22-18. A kill, service ace and an attack error against Daemen gave Southern Conn. State the victory, 25-18.
- Southern Conn. State jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set before the Wildcats slowly clawed their way back. After kills from Meyers and Alberts, a kill from Allison Post (Windsor, Calif.) briefly gave Daemen a 10-9 lead before the Owls took control again to take a four-point lead (18-14.) Daemen responded back with more kills from Logan and Burns and a service ace from Meyer to tie the score at 18. The Wildcats hung around late in the set and brought the score within a point again (22-21) before the Owls responded with a 3-1 run to take the third set, 25-22.
- The start of the fourth set was similar to the third set – the Owls jumped out to a giant lead (6-1) before the Wildcats chipped away again, this time with a 5-1 run (7-6 Southern Conn. State.) The Owls maintained the lead before an attack error gave the Wildcats an 18-17 lead. A kill from Kuliga gave Daemen a 24-20 lead, their largest lead of the set. The Owls responded with four straight points (three kills from Vazquez) to tie the score at 24. After 11 score ties, the Owls pulled away to complete the series victory with one last exclamation point kill from Gabriela Gaibur for the 37-35 set final.
- Daemen won the statistical battles in kills (63 - 49), hitting percentage (.261 - .170), assists (61-47), and digs (66-58.) Southern Conn. State out-edged Daemen in both hitting percentage (.213-.163) and service aces (8-2.)

After playing their first 13 matches of the 2021 season on the road, the Wildcats make their long-awaited home debut next Thursday, Sept. 30 when they host long-time rival Roberts Wesleyan - the first of three straight at the friendly confines of Lumsden Gymnasium.
