Women's Volleyball Continues Unbeaten Start To Conference Play

Wildcats down rival Redhawks for fourth win in last five outings

AMHERST, N.Y. - Make it 13 straight wins for Daemen in the Thruway Rivalry series.

Playing in front of a home crowd for the first time this season, the Wildcats picked up a 3-1 victory (25-15, 25-22, 19-25, 25-12) over long-time rival Roberts Wesleyan in East Coast Conference action tonight. The Wildcats have won four of their five matches, improving to 8-6 overall this season while also remaining unbeaten (3-0) in conference play.

Roberts Wesleyan, which was seeking its first win in the series since 2014, dropped to 0-13 this season, including an 0-3 mark in the conference.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • The Redhawks had no answer for the duo of Maggie Burns (Lousville, Ky.) and Caitlyn Meyer (Clarence, N.Y.) who combined for 30 kills and a .509 hitting percentage. From the pin, Burns matched her career-high and tallied 16 kills for the second straight match. She added a team-high 14 digs for her first double-double of the season and the second of her Daemen career. Over on the right side, Meyer notched 14 kills on a .600 hitting percentage despite playing in just the first and fourth sets.
  • Outside hitter Allison Post (Windsor, Calif.) also hit double figures for the Wildcats, finishing with 10 kills on 23 swings. Hitting out the middle, junior Loren Alberts (Huntley, Ill.) chipped in seven kills on a .545 hitting percentage.
  • Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) saw action at both setter and libero this evening and finished with a match-high 32 assists to go with 13 digs - her eighth double-double of the season. Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) added 26 assists to the Daemen cause.
  • Three-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) totaled 13 digs.
  • Sydney Yanak (nine kills), Madison Truong (25 assists, 10 digs) and Teagan Weber (17 digs) paced the Redhawks.

THE TURNING POINT
Daemen appeared poised to pick up a three-set victory, but Roberts Wesleyan managed to extend the match to a fourth set. The Redhawks built a 20-13 lead in the third and fended off a late Wildcat rally.

But, Daemen's starters returned to the floor for the fourth set. The Wildcats built a 15-6 lead and any thoughts of a wild RWC comeback went out the window.

Daemen tallied 12+ kills in all four sets, finishing with 67 in the match, compared to just 34 for the Redhawks.

MATCH NOTES
  • Daemen holds a 32-20 advantage in the all-time series with RWC. During the current 13-match winning streak, Daemen owns a 39-5 advantage in sets won.
  • Daemen is now 22-9 at home since the start of the 2018 season.
  • Roberts Wesleyan has dropped 13 straight matches dating back to last season. They ended the unorthodox 2020 season (played in spring 2021) with a 3-0 loss to Daemen.
  • In the last two matches, Burns is averaging 4.57 kills per set.
  • Meyer has now posted 10+ kills in 12 of 14 matches this season. She leads the ECC in total kills (184) and kills per set (3.68) this season.
