Men's Cross Country Places 9th at Canisius Alumni Classic

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's cross country team finished ninth out of 12 teams at the Canisius Alumni Classic at Buffalo's Delaware Park on a soggy Saturday afternoon. 

After placing first overall in the Equality and Highlander Invitationals, Daemen junior Jon Moote (Wilson, N.Y.) was the first Division II runner to cross the finish line, finishing 36th out of 170 runners with an 8K time of 26:22.0. 

Daemen placed 9th out of 13 teams at the meet. Buffalo took home the team crown, placing six runners in the top 10 to finish with a total of 27 points. Checkers AC placed three runners in the top 10 to finish second at 73, followed by Duquesne (87), host Canisius (98), RIT (121), St. Bonaventure (156), SUNY-ESF (219), and Geneseo (230). Daemen finished ninth with 246 points. Niagara (319), Afred State (324), Oswego (336), and Buffalo State (410) rounded out the meet. 

Fellow East Coast Conference opponents Roberts Wesleyan and D'Youville did not finish the race as a team. 

The Wildcats have two weeks off before they compete in the ECC championships in Rochester, N.Y.  on November 5.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • 13 Daemen runners participated in the race today.
  • One week after breaking the program record, Moote's time of 26:22.0 today ranks fourth overall in the Daemen 8K record book. 
  • Junior Connor O'Brien (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished 44th overall, posting a time of 27:03.7 to finish second on the team. 
  • Freshman Aidan Kincaid (Orchard Park, N.Y.) placed third on the team and 74th overall with a personal best time of 27:41.1, 10 seconds faster than his previous PR at the Highlander Inviataiontl (27:51.9). 
  • Junior Steven Blatto (Lancaster, N.Y.) finished 77th overall with a time of 27:47.2 to place fourth on the Wildcats.
  • Junior Phil Ceccarelli (Hamburg, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the Cats today, crossing the finish line 82nd overall with a time of 28:00.8. 
  • Junior David Schwinger (Buffalo, N.Y.), senior John Bruggman (Batavia, N.Y.) and sophomore John Balch (Saranac, N.Y.) all figured into the race this afternoon. Schwinger finished 96th with a time of 28:26.6, Bruggman placed 103 at 28:48.5, and Balch crossed the finish at 29:09.9 to finish 112th. 
  • Freshman Josh Trometer (Lancaster, N.Y.) and senior Dominic Clementi (Barker, N.Y.) finished 118th and 119th, respectively. Trometer came in at 29:28.5 in his third career race, while Clementi crossed the finish line four seconds later at 29:32.9. 
  • Junior Nolan Robillard (Hamburg, N.Y.) returned from injury to finish 129th at 30:09.7, while redshirt-senior Alexander Reynolds (Olean, N.Y.) crossed the finish line at 30:30.1 to place 134th. 
  • Junior Laertes Cushing (Alfred, N.Y.) rounded out the Daemen runners with a time of 31:36.0 to finish 14th.
