The Wildcats will head to rival Roberts Wesleyan for an East Coast Conference match Saturday (Oct. 22). LAST TIME OUT Freshman Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) scored two goals to lead Daemen to a 3-0 victory over crosstown rival D'Youville back on Oct. 12. Daemen fired nine shots at the D'Youville goal over the first 21 minutes of the game, but the contest remained scoreless until the 37 minute when senior Faye Panagopoulos (Kenmore, N.Y.) scored for the hosts. Graduate student Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) created the scoring chance when she sent a pass up to Panagopoulos from around midfield. Panagopoulos battled and D'Youville defender for the ball and then sent a shot past Saints goalkeeper Reagan Duval from 10 yards out for her first goal of the year. Daemen took a 1-0 lead into halftime and secured the win 15 minutes into the second half when Miranto struck for two goals in the span of 2:37. Her first tally was unassisted at 61:20, as she stole an attempted clear by a defender and blasted a shot past Duval from 20 yards out. It marked her first career goal as well. Her second goal came off a corner kick by junior Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) at 63:57, as Miranto got a head on the kick and sent the shot into the upper right corner. Daemen out shot the Saints 12-3 in the second half and the hosts finished with a 22-4 advantage in shots overall (12-1 in shots on goal). Freshman goalkeeper Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) made her third start of the year for Daemen and was credited with one save en route to her first career shutout. RETURNING VETERANS Daemen returns 20 players from its 2021 team, including six who collected All-ECC honors last year. Experience is abundant, as the team features two graduate students, seven seniors and five juniors. The team's top five scorers from last year all return to the pitch this fall. Senior Tatyjana Scalisi (Williamsville, N.Y.) and sophomore Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) accounted for 13 of the team's 34 goals last year and both earned first team All-ECC honors. Scalisi also earned all-region honors, while Diaz became the first player in program history to be named the ECC Rookie of the Year. All-conference defenders Julia Eichel (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Baylin Tighe (Tonawanda, N.Y.) return after heading up a backline that surrendered just 20 goals in 16 games last year. Senior goalkeeper Tori DeLappi (Medina, Ohio) is coming off an all-conference junior season in which she averaged five saves a game and posted a 1.27 goals against average. Graduate students Grace Stranahan and Katelyn Sidoti will serve as teams captains for 2022. Scalisi and Miranto are tied for the team lead in goals (2). DeLappi has started 10 of 12 games in goal. She ranks third among the ECC leaders in total saves (53), fourth in goals against average (1.85) and fifth in save percentage (.757). MIRANTO NAMED ECC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Freshman midfielder Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) was named the ECC Rookie of the Week after scoring two of Daemen's three goals in the 3-0 win over D'Youville last week. Miranto becomes the first Daemen women's soccer player to be honored with an ECC weekly award this season, and the first Daemen player to be selected ECC Women's Rookie of the Week since current teammate Alyssa Diaz (Rochester, N.Y.) did so on Nov. 8, 2021. Her first collegiate goal at 61:20 gave Daemen a 2-0 lead and she scored again just 2:37 later to secure the win. She finished with a team-high four shots on goal during the game. ROAD WARRIORS Daemen recently closed out a stretch of seven-straight road games and has played eight of its 13 games on the road this season. ON THE HORIZON Daemen returns to ECC play Wednesday (10/26) when it travels to the College of Staten Island. SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS Roberts Wesleyan had a three game winning streak snapped and suffered its first league loss following a 2-1 setback against Molloy last Saturday. The Redhawks have posted league wins over St. Thomas Aquinas (3-2), Lincoln (7-0), D'Youville (3-0), Queens (2-0) and Staten Island (2-0). RWU is ranked 10th in the East Region by the United Soccer Coaches. The Redhawks went 7-8-1 overall (6-3-0 ECC) last year and were picked fourth in the 2022 ECC preseason coaches' poll.
