Men's & Women's Tennis Teams Host Edinboro Friday

2/24/2022 1:00:00 PM

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen men's and women's tennis teams will both return to action Friday, February 25 when they host the Edinboro Fighting Scots for dual matches happening simultaneously (beginning at 11:30 a.m.) at Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.

The Daemen men (0-4, 0-0 ECC) suffered a 6-1 loss to Division I Niagara in their spring season opener last Saturday evening. It marked the Wildcats' first action since a 7-0 loss to the same NU team in their fall finale on October 24. The Wildcats were supposed to play at Division III Allegheny earlier this week, but that match was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Gators' program.

The Wildcats are led by veteran Phillip Vance (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Now in his third season with the program, Vance has collected 15 wins (combined singles/doubles) in his career to date. Newcomers Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium) and Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Canada) also figure prominently in the Wildcats' lineup.

The Edinboro men's team is coming off a 7-0 win over West Virginia State last weekend, a victory that pushed their record to 2-3 this season. It snapped a three-match slide that included setbacks to Walsh (4-3), Le Moyne (6-1) and Charleston (W.Va.) (4-2). Bruno Sabio has posted a pair of wins in the No. 1 singles position, while Ruben Acuna is a perfect 5-0 in singles play to lead EU.

On the women's side, Friday's match is Daemen's first of the spring season. The Wildcats (4-7, 2-3 ECC) have been idle since October 29 when they fell 4-0 to top-seeded District of Columbia in the semifinal round of the ECC Championship tournament.

Sophomore Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) leads the team with 12 combined singles/doubles wins this season. Rubio, who earned ECC Rookie of the Year honors last spring, has 25 wins in her career, already putting her in a tie for ninth in program history.

The most experienced of the bunch is grad student Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) who ranks third all-time with 76 combined singles/doubles wins. Stasiuk won four singles matches and five doubles matches last fall and was named to the All-ECC Second Team. She joined Rubio and Karli Hollins as the only players in program to history to garner All-ECC recognition.

The Edinboro women are off to a 4-1 start this season and are coming off a 7-0 defeat of Division III Westminster (Pa.) last weekend. Vidisha Pallamreddy (4-1 singles) and Anisha Thada (4-1 singles) have led the way in singles play and are unbeaten (3-0) as a doubles pair.
