Women's Tennis Looks For Third Straight Win Sunday At RIT

4/1/2022 3:00:00 PM

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team rides a two-match winning streak into a non-conference dual match Sunday (3:30 p.m.) against the RIT Tigers at the Midtown Athletic Club.

The Wildcats improved to 6-9 on the season following a hard fought 5-4 victory at Shenandoah earlier this week. The the match knotted at 4-4, junior Mackenzie Schayes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) came through in the clutch, winning her match on the fifth singles court over Kelly Hudak. Schayes needed three sets (6-4, 0-6, 6-2) to get it done, marking her second three-set victory of the season.

Sophomore Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and graduate student Christina Staisuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) lead the team with 16 combined singles/doubles wins this season. Rubio, the 2020-21 ECC Rookie of the Year, is just one win shy of becoming the seventh player in program history to reach 30 career wins. Stasiuk, who earned Second Team All-ECC honors last fall, is unbeaten (4-0) in singles play this spring and has increased her career win total to 83. She is just one win shy of tying Gretchen Ringler for second on the program's all-time wins list. Stasiuk recorded the 47th singles win of her career in Wednesday's defeat of Shenandoah, tying the program record set by Hayle Scanlan from 2013-17.

The Wildcats will be meeting RIT for the second time this season. Daemen scored a 4-3 win over the Tigers in their season opener back on Sept. 7.

The Tigers are led by head coach Tom Linhart who is in his second stint with the program. The roster includes five returning players from their 2020-21 team, and the Tigers have posted a 3-3 record so far this season. They have won three of their last four matches, but are coming off a 9-0 setback to Vassar. The Tigers visit Rochester on Saturday.
