Women's Volleyball Sweeps West Liberty In Final Non-Conference Tune Up

Daemen returns to Lumsden Gym To Host D'Youville On Thursday

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- The Daemen University women's volleyball team wrapped up their trek through West Virginia with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-21) sweep over West Liberty on Saturday afternoon. This was the fifth sweep for the Wildcats this season. 

The Wildcats jumped out to a quick two-set lead, out-hitting the Hilltoppers 35-17 with a .225 hitting percentage through the first two sets. Daemen earned their second-best hitting percentage in the third set (.317). 

After falling to Fairmont State 3-0 last night, this is the third time this season that the Wildcats have bounced back from a loss. Daemen moves to 6-3 in non-conference play. The Wildcats open up East Coast Conference action on Thursday when they play host to crosstown foe D'Youville at Lumsden Gym. Tip-off is set for 6 PM. 

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • For the sixth time this season, senior outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) led the Wildcats in kills, finishing with 15 for an average of 5 kills per set on the day. She earned her third double-double of the season, adding 14 digs in the match.  
  • Outside hitter Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) notched her highest hitting percentage of the season today with .367. She totaled 13 kills and a season-low two errors to average 4.33 kills/set. 
  • Junior middle blocker Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) and outside hitter Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) tallied eight kills a piece.
  • Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) was the sole setter for Daemen, finishing with a double-double with 37 assists and 16 digs. Alessi averaged 12.33 assists/set. 
  • Junior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) tallied 18 digs to average 6 digs/set.
  • Sophomore middle hitter Amelia Armstrong (River Falls, Wisc.) added seven kills and just one error, finishing with a team-high .375 hitting percentage. She added a block on the day.
  • Senior defensive specialist Mickaley Martin (Saline, Mich.) played in all three sets and notched nine digs in the match. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Logan recorded six kills in the first set alone for a hitting percentage of .385. 
  • Daemen out-killed West Liberty in every set, finishing with 53 compared to just 27 kills for the Hilltoppers.
  • The Wildcats never trailed in the first set. 
  • Daemen turned up the heat in the second, out-killing the Hilltoppers 15-6.
  • After the Wildcats recorded zero service aces in the first set, Kuliga and Logan notched two aces a piece in the second. 
  • Kuliga notched three blocks on the day, finishing with one solo block and two assisted blocks. 

GAME NOTES
  • Today's match marked the third all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Hilltoppers. Daemen has won the last two matches.
  • Daemen has swept opponents five times this season.
  • The Wildcats wrapped up their West Virginia road trip 1-1 on the weekend in their final tune-up before conference play. 
  • Amelia Armstrong is the only player on the Daemen roster to have started in every match the Wildcats have played this season.
