THE WILDCATS Daemen dropped its first two dual matches of the fall season to RIT (5-4) and Millersville (5-2), before posting a 9-0 win over Nazareth. The Wildcats are playing their first match since suffering a 7-0 loss at Division I Niagara on Sept. 30. Head coach Richard Greco returns five players from last year's team and welcomes two newcomers to the 2023-24 roster. Sophomore Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) played No. 1 singles as a freshman last year. Graduate student Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ontario) posted a team-high 11 singles wins last year (11-8), while sophomore Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Nethewrlands) and fifth-year senior Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium) both finished with five singles wins. Newcomers Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) and Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany) are both expected to make immediate contributions. Alvarez played the last two seasons at Emory & Henry College. Mergens, a freshman, trained with TC Bochum in Germany prior to enrolling at Daemen. Alvarez picked up his first singles win as a Wildcat during the loss to Millersville and is 2-23 in singles play. Mergens earned his first career singles win during the loss to Millersville and is also 2-3 on the year. THE GATORS Allegheny is a NCAA Division III member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Gators have played two dual matches this fall, losing to Edinboro (9-0) and defeating Penn State Behrend (9-0). Allegheny went 17-5 (8-0 PAC), claimed the PAC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament last year. Junior Anton Hedlund returns after earned first team All-PAC and PAC Player of the Year honors last year. All-conference selections Will Jarvie and David Rodriguez also return. SERIES HISTORY Wednesday's match will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Gators. Allegheny has prevailed in the previous three meetings, including a 4-3 decision last year at South Towns Tennis Club in Orchard Park, N.Y. UP NEXT The spring portion of Daemen's 2023-24 schedule will be announced in the coming months.
