AMHERST, N.Y. - Hannah Thomas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) of Daemen University has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week for competitions held Dec. 4-10. The announcement of ECC weekly awards was made this afternoon in the league's weekly sport report.
It marks the first time in her career she has earned the honor. She is one of only six athletes in the history of the Daemen women's track and field program to garner a weekly award from the ECC during the indoor track and field season. She joins past honorees Jordan Weir (Track Athlete of the Week: Feb. 11, 2013), Toria Williams (Field Athlete of the Week: Feb. 2, 2015), Mackenzie Donahue (Track Athlete of the Week: Feb. 8, 2016), Katja Meyer (Field Athlete of the Week: Jan. 22, 2019) and Kassandra Nolet (Track Athlete of the Week: Feb. 10, 2020, Dec. 2, 2022 and Feb. 6, 2023).
A graduate student, Thomas helped the Wildcats place third out of 13 teams at the Utica Holiday Classic this past Saturday on the campus of Utica University, as she won both the mile and 3,000 meters. She finished first out of 19 runners in the mile with a personal best time of 5:21.48 and capped her day by placing first out of 10 runners in the 3,000 meters with a personal best time of 10:48.70. Thomas' 3,000-meter time leads the ECC while her mile time ranks third. She has now placed first in all three races she has competed in so far this season, as her first-place 800-meter time from the Houghton December Classic (2:23.78) also leads the ECC.
Thomas is also a three-year member of the Daemen women's cross country team and was a three-time ECC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week selection this past fall. She is a two-time all-conference (2022, 2023) and one-time all-region (2023) performer in cross country.
The Daemen track & field teams will be idle until January 20 when they head to Houghton University to take part in the Highlander Invitational.
