AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Daemen men's tennis team opens dual match play Wednesday (Sept. 20) when the Wildcats travel to Rochester Institute of Technology.

THE WILDCATS
Daemen kicked off the 2023-24 season this past weekend by taking part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championships in Flushing, N.Y. The Wildcats were represented by graduate student Zachary Laplante (Ottawa, Ontario), fifth-year senior Luis de Vuyst (Antwerp, Belgium), junior Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico), sophomores Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and freshman Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany). Head coach Richard Greco returns five players from last year's team and welcomes two newcomers to the 2023-24 roster. Lumanog played No. 1 singles as a freshman last year. Laplante posted a team-high 11 singles wins last year (11-8), while Chitanand and de Vuyst both finished with five singles wins. Alvarez and Mergens are newcomers and are both expected to make immediate contributions. Alvarez played the last two seasons at Emory & Henry College. Mergens, a freshman, trained with TC Bochum in Germany prior to enrolling at Daemen..

THE TIGERS
RIT also opens dual match play on Wednesday. The Tigers are a NCAA Division III member and compete in the Liberty League. RIT went 7-10 overall and 2-6 in the Liberty League last year. Junior Christian Berko returns after going 12-10 last year, primarily at No. 2 singles.

SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday's match will mark the seventh all-time meeting between the two schools. RIT has prevailed in three of the last four meetings and owns a 4-2 advantage in the series. The teams played a classic match last February in Williamsville, with Daemen prevailing 4-3.

Daemen heads to Pennsylvania at the end of the week. The Wildcats will play at Millersville on Sunday (Sept. 24) and Kutztown on Monday (Sept. 25).
