Second Half Run Sparks Wildcats Past Saints, 84-64

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Daemen University men's basketball team used a 24-3 run midway through the second half to secure an 84-64 victory over D'Youville University in an East Coast Conference contest this afternoon at Campus Center gymnasium on the D'Youville campus.

Daemen, which entered the game ranked sixth in the East Region by the Division II College Sports Communicators (D2CSC), ran its winning streak to four games and improved to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in the ECC. Daemen has won its last four games by an average of 23 points. The host Saints dropped to 6-15 overall and 3-7 in the league.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Five players scored in double figures for the Wildcats, marking the eighth time this season Daemen has finished a game with five players in double figures.
  • Senior Justin Hemphill (Buffalo, N.Y.) netted 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He also totaled four blocks and two steals.
  • Graduate student Joey Atkins (Watervliet, N.Y.) connected on 6-of-8 shots and scored 15 points. He added five rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
  • Senior Dylan Fasoyiro (Houston, Tex.) returned to action after missing seven games with a hand injury and contributed 14 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes.
  • Sophomore Justin Glover (Buffalo, N.Y.) chipped in 13 points, while senior Andrew Mason (Webster, N.Y.) finished with 10 points and five boards. Mason now stands 13 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
  • Junior Trayton Trice totaled 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Saints.

GAME NOTES
  • It marked the 12th all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Saints. Daemen has prevailed in all 12 meetings.
  • Daemen has limited 13 of its 22 opponents to less than 70 points and leads the ECC in team defense, allowing just 69.6 points per game.
  • Daemen scored the first four points of the game, but the Wildcats managed just five points over the next four minutes which allowed the Saints to open up a 15-9 lead.
  • Daemen cut the lead to a point, 15-14, following a dunk by Atkins at the 12:37 mark, but the hosts responded with a 10-2 run and took their largest lead of the game, 25-16, following a layup by junior Luke Theisen with 8:19 left before halftime.
  • Daemen, which had missed its first six three-point attempts of the game, found its shooting range over the final eight minutes of the half. A triple by junior Payton Shumpert (Syracuse, N.Y.) sparked the Wildcats on a 13-2 run. Mason drilled two triples during the rally and his three-pointer with 3:34 left before the break capped it and gave the visitors a 29-27 lead.
  • The Wildcats outscored the Saints 9-4 over the final 2:50 and Daemen took a 38-31 lead into intermission.
  • Daemen scored the first six points of the second half to open up a 13-point lead, 44-31, but the Saints scored the next five points to cut the lead back to single digits at 44-36.
  • The Daemen lead was back up to double digits, 50-39, when the hosts put together an 11-2 run and cut the lead to two points, 52-50, following a conventional three-point play by senior Bryson Birdsong with 11:55 to play.
  • Daemen responded with 13 unanswered points over the next four minutes and took a 65-50 lead after Glover and Fasoyiro capped the rally with back-to-back three-pointers.
  • The lead later grew to 26 points, 82-56, following a bucket by Fasoyiro with 2:28 left.
  • Daemen shot 42-percent (29-69) from the field overall and made 9-of-25 from three-point land. The Wildcats canned 17-of-24 from the charity stripe.
  • D'Youville shot just 24-percent (9-of-37) from the field in the second half and finished just 23-of-71 (32%) from the field overall. The Saints made just 3-of-24 from downtown and made 15-of-17 from the charity stripe.
NEXT JUMP BALL
Daemen travels to the College of Staten Island (Feb. 9) and the University of the District of Columbia (Feb. 11) for ECC games next weekend.
