Tennis Teams Play Host To St. Lawrence Saturday

BACK ON THE COURT
The Daemen University men's and women's tennis teams will both play host to St. Lawrence University Saturday. Both matches will take place at Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville, N.Y. at 6 p.m.

THE WILDCATS
The Daemen men (2-5) will be playing their first match since suffering a 7-0 loss to Mercyhurst on Feb. 20. Lasse Mergens (4-4) has posted a team-high four singles wins, while Zachary Laplante (3-4) and Juan Alvarez (3-5) have both posted three wins on the year. The Daemen women are coming off a 6-1 win over D'Youville on March 3. Daemen prevailed in five of the six singles matches. Carly Armitage, Yinett Del Leon and Kitsa Scime all cruised to straight set wins at No. 4, No.3 and No. 2 singles to put the Wildcats up 4-0 and clinch the win. Junior Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.) picked up her first win of the spring season after posting a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles. The most competitive singles match of the night came at No. 1 singles, where Frida Rubio rallied for a 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory. Scime is now 13-5 on the season. She ranks fifth among Daemen's all-time leaders in career singles wins (36) and is now 31-12 in her last 43 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season.

 

SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
St. Lawrence is a NCAA Division III affiliate and a member of the Liberty League. The SLU men (3-1) have won their last three matches against SUNY Oneonta (9-0), Skidmore (5-4) and Ithaca (6-3). The Saints went 7-9 last year and suffered a 5-2 loss to Vassar in the quarterfinals of the Liberty League tournament.

The St. Lawrence women stand at 3-1 on the year. The Saints opened the spring season with three-straight wins over Saint Michael's (9-0), SUNY Oneonta (9-0) and Ithaca (7-2), before suffering an 8-1 loss to Skidmore. SLU went 10-6 last year and lost in the quarterfinals of the Liberty League tournament to Vassar.

 

UP NEXT
Both teams head to Florida for games next week. The men will play three matches, while the women are slated to play two matches.
