Box Score LEWISTON, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's tennis team fell to Division I Niagara University, 6-1, in a non-league contest on Sunday afternoon. It marked Daemen's first loss of the fall season and brought the Wildcats' overall record to 1-1 on the year.
After Niagara won No. 1 doubles in a 6-2 decision over sophomore
Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) and
Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany), the Daemen No. 2 doubles pairing of junior
Alex Lumanog (Albuquerque, N.M) and senior
Juan Alvarez (Puebla, Mexico) took Niagara's Rohan Srivastava and Gurustat Makkar the distance, but the Purple Eagles second doubles were able to outlast the Wildcats, 7-5, to win the doubles point. Senior
Jayven Williamson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and junior
Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) won No. 3 doubles by default as Niagara did not field a third team.Â
The Purple Eagles picked up five of six singles victories. Chitanand, playing in No. 1 singles for the first time this season and the second time in his three-year career at Daemen, fell to Niagara's Bedard (6-0, 2-3). Garcia picked up a victory in both sets, but fell to Maric, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles while Makkar outlasted Mergens (6-3, 6-0) in third singles. Lumanog, who played No. 1 singles for the majority of 2023-24 season, put up a fight against Niagara sophomore Jose Maria Garcia, but the Purple Eagle was victorious (6-2, 6-2) at No. 4 this afternoon. Srivastava and Alvarez played a competitive fifth singles (6-3, 6-2). Williamson earned Daemen's sole point of the match with a Niagara default at No. 6 singles.Â
