AMHERST, N.Y. – Four members of the Daemen University women's tennis team were selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon. Graduate student
Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.), seniors
Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and
Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) along with junior
Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.) all earned the award.
To be eligible for Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be a starter of important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average, and they must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility with at least one full calendar year completed at his/her current institution. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot.
For Rubio and Scime, it is the third consecutive year they have earned the award. It marks the second year that Armitage has taken home the honor and it is the first time in her career that Del Leon collected the accolade.
In her final year with the Wildcats, Rubio won 16 total matches with eight wins on both singles and doubles. Playing at No. 1 doubles primarily, Rubio earned seven of her eight victories alongside partner
Bella Bjerkan (Elmhurst, Ill.) and won a team-best seven matches at No. 1 singles. An All-ECC First Team selection this past fall, Rubio was ranked tenth in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Singles Rankings back on Nov. 15 after she opened conference play with wins against Desire Parn (6-3, 6-3) of the University of the District of Columbia and second team selection Maja Makal (6-4, 4-6, 10-5) of Queens University. Parn and Makal were also ranked by the ITA in the East Region as well, with Parn tabbed 13th and Makal 15th. The San Diego, Calif., native ended her Daemen career ranked second all-time for doubles wins (41) and sixth in singles wins (39). Rubio will finish her MBA this May after earning her undergraduate degree last year.
The team leader in singles wins this past season with 10, Scime bookended her Daemen career with CSC Academic All-District honors for the third time. A recipient of the prestigious C.L.A.W. award from the Daemen night of honors, Scime opened her 2024-25 season with six wins in her first seven matches at No. 2 singles. On doubles, she won seven matches with six alongside Del Leon. The longtime member of the Wildcats ends her Daemen career ranked second all-time in singles wins (48), fourth in combined career singles and doubles wins (82) and as a the program record holder for singles winning percentage (.631). Scime will earn her degree in human resource management later this month.
Del Leon collected all-district honors for the first time in her career after winning a team-best nine doubles matches. The Cape Coral, Fla., native played with a variety of doubles partners across the No. 1,2 and 3 courts but found her best success at No. 2 doubles with Scime as the duo won six matches together. In singles action, Del Leon collected six wins with four coming on No. 3 singles. She picked up her first collegiate win at No. 1 singles with 6-0, 6-0, win over Corinne Markovich of Shippensburg on Feb. 22. Overall, Del Leon ended her Daemen career ranked seventh in combined singles and doubles wins (58), sixth in doubles victories (32) and ninth in career singles wins (26). Del Leon will graduate with a degree in business administration this month.
Armitage earned CSC Academic All-District honors for the second time in her career this past season. The Rochester, N.Y., native earned seven doubles wins and five singles wins with all seven of her wins coming alongside partner
Stephanie Baier (Boise, Idaho). The duo went a perfect 4-0 on No. 2 doubles where they only dropped six total sets. In singles action, the junior won five total matches with three coming at No. 4 singles. She is currently pursuing a degree in natural science-health science while on the physical therapy track.
