AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen University men's volleyball team collected a 3-1 (15-24, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Maryland Eastern Shore to sweep the Hawks on the weekend. The Wildcats improve to 12-10 overall and 5-3 in NEC play.
Daemen dominated the court offensively in the win, out-hitting UMES 61 to 39 while posting a .312 hitting percentage. Three Wildcats posted double-digit kills, led by the big arms of redshirt senior
Billy Wieberg (Grand Island, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman
Aidan White (Fairport, N.Y.)'s 16 kills. Redshirt sophomore
Patrick Mullen (Farmingdale, N.J.) finished with 14 kills in the win.
IMPACT PLAYERS
- Wieberg totaled double-digit kills for the second straight match, totaling 16 kills on 33 attacks for a .303 hitting percentage, adding seven digs, three assists and one block assist.
- White finished with 16 kills and just five attacks on 29 attacks to hit at a .379 clip, adding four digs, two block assists, one ace and one assist.
- Mullen totaled 14 kills, eight digs, three aces and one block assist.
- Junior setter Jariel Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) posted his fourth double-double of the season with 53 assists, 10 digs, one ace and one kill.
- Fifth year senior Maverick O'Neill (East Amherst, N.Y.) totaled eight kills on 13 attacks for a team-high .462 hitting percentage, adding two block assists, one solo block, two digs and one assist.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Hawks jumped out to a 6-2 lead early and extended their lead to seven points in the middle of the set, 15-8, after the Wildcats compiled nine errors. UMES kept their foot on the gas for the rest of the first to win 25-15, hitting .381 in the set and out-blocked the Cats 6-0.
- After the game was tied up at 5 all, the Wildcats went on an 8-3 run off seven kills to take a 13-8 advantage early. Daemen held onto a multi-point lead to 19-15, but UMES recorded three straight points, all off Wildcat errors, to bring the game within one point. After kills from White (2), O'Neill. (1) and Wieberg (1), the Cats won six of the final eight points to take the second set 25-20 after out-hitting the Hawks 18-7.
- Both teams traded points to 10 all, but from there, the Wildcats never trailed again, cruising to a 25-21third-set victory to go up 2-1 in the match against UMES. Daemen showed off their heavy hitting arms in the third, finishing with 16 kills to the Hawks' nine. White finished with six third set kills while Wieberg contributed four.
- The fourth set stayed close from start to finish. With neither team scoring more than two points in a row throughout the set, Daemen and Maryland Eastern Shore were tied up at 20 until the Wildcats went on a 4-2 run to take a 24-22 advantage. O'Neill closed it out with a big kill to win the fourth 25-22 and take the set 3-1.
