AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Daemen University men's tennis team will host Houghton on Tuesday, April 7 at 5 PM at the Miller Tennis Center in a non-league match. The Wildcats come into the match up with a 3-13 overall record and 0-4 record in East Coast Conference play and are looking to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Highlanders are 4-5 overall and 1-2 in Empire 8 action.
The Wildcats fell 2-5 at the University of the District of Columbia on Friday afternoon to remain winless in ECC action, 0-4. The Firebirds won the first point of the match by winning two of three doubles pairings. The Wildcats dropped the No. 1 doubles pair of seniorÂ
Rohan Chitanand (Den Haag, Netherlands) and juniorÂ
Lasse Mergens (Bochum, Germany), 2-6. At second doubles, juniorÂ
Lucas Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) and freshmanÂ
Mitch Pollack (Winnipeg, Man.) battled close to a 4-6 defeat. FreshmenÂ
Pablo Viera (Naples, Fla.) and sophomoreÂ
Jordan Hamdan (Johnson City, N.Y.) won by default at third doubles. Daemen picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles today. After Hamdan won by default at sixth singles because UDC did not field a player, Pollack put together a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Ignacio Lopez Fernandez at No. 5 singles to earn the Wildcats' second point of the match. UDC took four of the six singles pairs to take the match, 2-5, but the Wildcats had two matches go to three sets. Playing at No. 1 singles again, Garcia battled to the very end with UDC's Sebastiano Palma, ultimately falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-7. At No. 3 singles, Chitanand squared up with UDC's Ambrose Evamy and took it to three, but Evamy pulled away 6-2, 5-7, 6-7 (4-7). Mergens fell (1-6, 0-6) at No. 2 singles, and Viera dropped his fourth singles match (0-6, 3-6).
Houghton, an NCAA Division III member, comes into Tuesday's match with a 4-5 overall record. Three of their wins came within their first five matches of the season, from there dropping three straight until they picked up a 5-2 win over Nazareth on Saturday. The Highlanders are led by freshman Rune Camps with five singles victories at No. 1 singles on the year, followed by freshman Eben Schilke who has four singles wins, three at No. 2 and one at No. 3 singles. Camps and Schilke both have four doubles victories this season too.Â
The Wildcats return to ECC play this weekend and will host St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday at 1:30 PM.Â
