Men's Soccer Drops Tight Match to West Liberty in Season Opener

AMHERST, N.Y. — Daemen men's soccer dropped a tight match to West Liberty on Thursday in its season opener, falling 3-2 at Royal Park. 

The Wildcats erased a two-goal deficit and tied the game at 2-2, but a quick goal by the Hilltoppers gave the visitors the lead back, which they held on to. 

HIGHLIGHTS
  • West Liberty secured an early 1-0  lead with a goal by Leyton Collier in the 7th minute.
  • The Hilltoppers then pulled ahead 2-0 just twenty-three seconds into the second half when Wilson Hanna found the back of the net. 
  • Daemen fought back, first getting on the board in the 59th minute when junior Afonso Abreu (Leiria, Portugal) scored his first goal as a Wildcat, converting a penalty kick.
  • Freshman Sincere Noble (Baltimore, Md.) then tied the game with his first career goal off assists from Christian Baker (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Abreu.
  • The Wildcats had a few early chances, with Jordan Hernandez (Stockon, Calif.) putting two shots off target. Fabrizzio Jaramillo (Lyndwood, Calif.) and Baker also put shots wide. 
  • In the 29th minute, Tim Florek (Marburg, Germany) got free on a breakaway, but he could not finish. 
  • Colin Hockridge (Scarborough, Ontario) made crucial saves in the first half for the Wildcats, stopping efforts from Brian Russell and Kevin Teather, keeping the home side within reach as WLU led 1-0 at the break. 
  • In the second half, Jordan Nobe (Logan, Utah) had a chance when he ripped a shot that got saved. 
  • Later in the half, Baker and AJ Di Mattina-Hale (Wellington, New Zealand) both had shots saved as Daemen could not equalize again. 
GAME NOTES
  • Hockridge finished with career-best 10 saves.
  • Abreu fired three shots in the game, putting one, his goal, on target. 
  • Jaramillo logged two shots, registering one on target.
  • As a team, the Wildcats recorded 18 shots with eight on target. 
  • Daemen had six corner kicks in the contest.

The Wildcats are on the road for the first time on Sunday, traveling to Pace for a 12 p.m. contest.
