Box Score ROCHESTER, NY - The Daemen Wildcats dropped a 2-0 decision to the Rio Grande Red Storm today at the Redhawks Classic hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College. With their third straight loss, Daemen falls to 2-3-0 on the season and find themselves under .500 for the first time since ending the 2009 campaign at 7-8-1. The Red Storm jump up to 2-3-0 with the win.
The Wildcats possessed the ball better today than in yesterday's 6-1 loss to NAIA #8 Spring Arbor, according to head coach
Dan Dolan. They were able to attempt 20 shots in the contest, compared to just nine for the Red Storm. Rio Grande was more efficient however, placing six of their attempts on frame while Daemen managed just nine shots on goal.
"I thought possessed well, but we struggled finishing and winning any balls out of the air," Dolan said. "Defensively, we can't continue to make simple mistakes."
Rio Grande got on the board in the 28th minute when Vanessa Montgomery found Taylor Ahrens on a corner kick. Ahrens pounded Montgomery's crossing feed into the Daemen net for the 1-0 lead.
After going to the half down 1-0, Daemen surrendered a second goal, this one by the Red Storm's Kasey Crow in the 50th minute, leaving Daemen to really play catch up the rest of the way.
Samantha Engel (Dryden, NY/Dryden HS) led Daemen with five shots on goal, but the Wildcats just could not find the back of the net.
Rio Grande's Allison Keeney made nine saves to secure the shutout and the win for the Red Storm.
With 14 days before their next game, Daemen has time to get back to the drawing board. They'll next face SUNY-ESF at home on September 22 at 11am.
