AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's soccer team earned its third shutout of the season by blanking Davis & Elkins College 1-0 today in a Saturday afternoon matinee affair at Dimp Wagner Stadium. With the win, Daemen improved to 3-1-0 on the season while the Senators, of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, fell to 0-4-0.
It was almost a case of missed opportunities for the Wildcats who generated several quality scoring chances, but were unable to find the back of the net. Daemen launched 15 shots but landed just five on frame.
Senior Kacey Bougard (East Aurora, N.Y./Sacred Heart) finally got Daemen on the board when she chipped a shot from the left wing over the head of D&E goalkeeper Ashley Winkelspecht for the lone tally of the game in the 79th minute. Sophomore back Meghan Lipinoga (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Canisius College) played a long pass from the right sideline to Bougard who did the rest. It was Bougard's fourth goal of the young season.
"We had some opportunities, but struggled to finish today," said head coach Dan Dolan. "I thought we played pretty well overall, but we had some frustration set in during the second half. It was nice to see us finish out a game that like with a victory though."
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) needed to make just three saves to pick up her second shutout of the season. The defensive quartet in front of her featuring Lipinoga, Hannah Fraser (Milton, Vt. /Milton), Meghan Diehl (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and Rachael Banasik (Depew, N.Y./Depew) were strong once again, limiting the Senators to just five total shot attempts. The shutout was Daemen's eighth in its last 13 games dating back to last season.
The Wildcats also improved to 3-0 at home this season. With the win, Daemen is now 21-4-1 at home dating back to 2010.
What lays ahead is an entire week for Daemen to prepare for the start of East Coast Conference play. Queens College comes to town next Saturday (Sept. 21) for a 1 p.m. tilt in the conference opener for both schools. Daemen also plays host to Molloy College in conference play next weekend (Sunday, Sept. 22).
