JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat today to Saint Peter's University in a non-conference matchup that saw the Wildcats take on their first NCAA Division I opponent in program history.
With the loss, Daemen falls to 3-5 overall this season. Â The host Peacocks of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference improve to 1-1 with the win today.
Daemen's two points came in singles play. Â Junior
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Genseo) was impressive in her No. 1 singles match, outlasting SPU's Elena Melian Puigventos, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Â The Wildcats also picked up a point in No. 6 singles where sophomore
Sarah Crissy (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) won by default.
A pair of additional singles matches went to three sets as Daemen was vying for the upset. Â In the No. 4 slot, freshman
Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) fell 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to Christian Resurreccion, while classmate
Delaney Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) also pushed her match to three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) before falling to Aidah Muhammad in the No. 5 singles slot.
SPU took two-out-of-three in doubles action to earn the single point awarded for doubles competitions in NCAA Division I scoring. Â Hollins teamed with classmate
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) to win in the No. 1 doubles slot, 9-8, over SPU's Malieva Hedberg and Lucia Radovic.
Daemen returns to East Coast Conference play tomorrow (Saturday, October 3) with a 12 p.m. matchup versus Saint Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y.
