BOX SCOREWILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end tonight, falling to visiting Clarion University, 6-3, at Miller Tennis Center. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 8-11 overall while Clarion, of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, improved to a perfect 6-0.
The No. 1 doubles team of
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) got Daemen off to a fast start by downing Clarion's Lauren Zezenski and Maria Snyder, 8-2. But, Clarion took the other two doubles matches, including a close 8-5 decision in the No. 3 match, as the Golden Eagles' Jessica Kennedy and Allie Probst got the better of Daemen's
Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and
Tianna Washington (North Chili, N.Y./Monroe CC).
Hollins took down Zezenski in the No. 1 singles slot, 6-1, 6-2, to even up the match at two-apiece. But, only Ringler could muster another singles win for Daemen. She won her No. 3 singles match vs. Maddie Robinson, 6-3, 6-1, to round out the scoring for Daemen.
Today's result marks the first loss of the spring season for the Wildcats who opened 2015 with three-straight wins at last week's Daemen/Medaille Invitational. Going back to last fall, Daemen hadn't lost since a 9-0 defeat to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Oct. 18 in the penultimate match of their fall season.
Daemen returns to action on Mar. 9 against another PSAC team - West Chester University. The match, which takes place in Tampa, Fla., marks the first of four for the Wildcats in The Sunshine State as coach
Stephen Beatty treks his team south.
