Women's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season

Several School-Records Fall at Coastal Carolina University Invite

CONWAY, S.C. - The Daemen College women's track and field team opened the outdoor portion of its 2014-15 schedule here this weekend by taking part in the Coastal Carolina University Invitational. A total of 42 institutions and 1,422 student athletes competed in the event.

School-record performances by sophomores Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and Hannah Rice (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) highlighted the two-day event for Daemen. Donahue finished third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:36.68, breaking the previous school-record of 18:50.88 set by Jordan Weir at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational last April. Rice placed eighth in the seeded 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.00, breaking the previous school-record of 2:23.22 set by Brittany Denton at the 2014 East Coast Conference Outdoor Championships.

Daemen's 4x800 relay team of Rice, juniors Brooke Nolan (Depew, N.Y./Depew) and Ally Pajak (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca) and freshman Lindsey Wood (Newfield, N.Y./Newfield) also established a school-record with a time of 10:23.23, which placed them 11th in a field of 15 teams. The previous standard was 11:01.3 set in 2012.

Additional highlights included top-10 finishes by Nolan and Wood in the 800-meter run and a ninth-place showing by Luz Mota (Bronx, N.Y.University Heights) in the 100-meter dash.  Nolan placed seventh in the 800-meters with a time of 2:31.48, while Wood was 10th at 2:34.69. Mota ran a time of 13.77 in the 100-meter dash.

Top-25 efforts were placed by freshman Amy Trabert (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) in the 5,000-meter run (13th, 19:15.92), sophomore Leah May (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) in the 200-meter dash (16th, 28.42), Pajak in the 1,500-meter run (20th, 5:29.10) and sophomore Ashley Krol (Depew, N.Y.Depew) in the long jump (21st, 4.43 meters). Pajak came just short of a top-25 effort in the 3,000-meter run (26th, 12:16.49), while junior Jillian Sosnowski (Depew, N.Y.Depew) did the same in the long jump (26th, 4.26 meters)

Daemen is idle until April 4 when it takes part in the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational.
