ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's track and field team posted a sixth-place showing at the East Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held this afternoon on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College. The host Redhawks claimed the team championship for the second-straight year.
Sophomore Toria Williams (Buffalo, N.Y./Medaille College) successfully defended the ECC shot put title she earned last year as a rookie, as she posted a toss of 11.89 meters to outdistance the second-place effort of Tatyana Calhoun (11.46 meters) of the University of the District of Columbia. Williams also placed fourth in the discus (27.85 meters) and sixth in the hammer throw (27.00 meters).
Additional Daemen highlights during the field events included a seventh-place showing by junior Jillian Sosnowski (Depew, N.Y./Depew) in the triple jump (8.98 meters) and a 10th-place effort by Sosnowski in the long jump (4.19 meters).
Junior Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and sophomore Hannah Rice (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) shined during the track events for Daemen. Donahue finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:37.45, while Rice placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.21. Daemen placed five runners in among the Top-15 finishers in the 800-meter run. Junior Brooke Nolan (Depew, N.Y./Depew) placed ninth (2:29.74), sophomore Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield Alabama) finished 10th (2:30.99), freshman Lindsey Wood (Newfield, N.Y./Newfield) finished 11th (2:32.46) and graduate student Anna Lyons (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) finished 13th (2:32.60).
Daemen's 4x800-meter relay team of Denton, Donahue, Rice and Wood capped the solid day for the Daemen women by claiming ECC championship with a first-place time of 10:03.79.
Additional highlights during the track events included top-10 finishes by freshman Amy Trabert (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) and freshman Kailyn Szymanski (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport). Trabert placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:12.80, while Szymanski finished seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.92.
Daemen caps the season next weekend (April 25) when it takes part in the Brockport Golden Eagle Run.
