OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team secured its second win of the season today by downing host SUNY Oswego, 8-1, in non-conference action.
With the win, Daemen improves to 2-1 on the young season, whle the host Lakers drop to 1-3.
Daemen took control of the match by sweeping through doubles play. Â
Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) made her season debut in No. 1 doubles, teaming with
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) to set the tone with an 8-2 win over Oswego's Alicia Kreamer and Alli Ullrich.
The closest doubles match came in the No. 2 slot where
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) and
Aman Shamaa (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) were pushed by the Lakers' Jill Travis and Leslie Usherwood, eventually winning 9-7.
Maria McGrath (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and
Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) added an 8-2 win in the No. 3 doubles slot to complete the Daemen sweep.
In singles action, Daemen picked up wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Â Hollins (No. 1, 6-0, 6-1), Scanlan (No. 2, 6-0, 6-1), Ringler (No. 3, 6-1, 6-0) and Robins (No. 4, 6-1, 6-1) all picked up their second point of the match for the Wildcats. Â The quartet of singles winners were joined by freshman Delany Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) who didn't drop a set in her 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 5 slot.
An originally scheduled non-conference match tomorrow at Thiel University was cancelled earlier in the week meaning Daemen next takes the court in its 2015 home opener, a non-conference clash with Elmira College this Tuesday, September 15. Â That match is set for a 4 p.m. start at the Ellicott Tennis Courts on the campus of the University at Buffalo, Daemen's new home, outdoor venue.
