AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team impressed in its 2015-16 home debut, defeating visiting Elmira College, 8-1, in non-conference action today at the Ellicott Tennis Courts.
With the win, Daemen improves to 3-1 overall this season, marking the first time in the brief history of the program that the Wildcats have moved to two games over .500. Â The Soaring Eagles, a NCAA Division III affiliate and member of the Empire 8 Conference, fall to 1-3.
Daemen's No. 1 doubles team of
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) set the tone early on with an 8-2 win over Elmira's Ellen Plowman and Ayaka Yoshino.
That was followed by a hard-fought win in No. 3 doubles by Daemen's
Sarah Crissy (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) and
Delaney Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport). Â Teaming together for the second time this season, Crissy and Fragale earned their first doubles win of the season, 8-6, over Elmira's Caitlyn Dwyer and Emily Green.
The lone bright spot for Elmira came in No. 2 doubles action where Megan Fitzgerald and Stephanie Tock scored an 8-4 win versus the Wildcats'
Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and
Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda).
In singles action, it was all Daemen as the Wildcats swept all five matches. Â It's the second time this season that Daemen has won all five singles matches, and the first since their season-opening 9-0 shutout of Molloy College.
Hollins battled Yoshino in the No. 1 singles slot, winning a long first set, 7-6, before closing out the match with a 6-3 win in the second. Â The win kept Hollins' singles mark unblemished (4-0) thus far this season.
Scanlan was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Plowman in the No. 2 singles slot to run her season record to 3-1. Â The same was true for Ringler and Robins who rebounded from their doubles defeat to win in the No. 3 and 4 singles slots, respectively. Â Ringler took down Tock, 6-1, 6-2, while Robins was a little more stiffly tested by Ftizgerald, winning 6-3, 6-4.
Fragale (No. 5) and Crissy (No. 6) completed the sweep with wins at the backend of singles action. Â Fragale downed Green 6-1, 6-0 and Crissy won 6-0, 6-4 over Dwyer.
Daemen jumps back into East Coast Conference play by visiting Roberts Wesleyan College tomorrow (Wednesday, September 16) for a 4 p.m. start in Rochester, N.Y. Â The Wildcats (1-1 ECC) will be looking for their second league win of the season.
