Women's Tennis Battles At Roberts Wesleyan, Falls 6-3

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team fought hard, but dropped today's East Coast Conference match at Roberts Wesleyan College, 6-3.

The loss snapped Daemen's modest two-match winning streak and drops the Wildcats to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in ECC play. RWC, which was picked fifth in the ECC preseason poll, remains unblemished this season (3-0) while claiming the win in their first conference match of the season.

RWC took a 2-1 lead in the match by winning two of the three doubles matchups to open play today.  Daemen picked up a win in the No. 1 doubles slot as the team of Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) won for the second consecutive day, taking down RWC's top pairing of Natalia Cardona and Tiffany Hamdan, 8-5.

In singles play, Hollins and Scanlan were point-scorers for the Wildcats.  Hollins dropped the opening set in her No. 1 singles match versus Cardona, 7-5, but rebounded to win the next two 6-3, 6-1 to take the match.  The singles win moved Hollins to 5-0 individually this season, with all five appearances coming in the No. 1 singles slot.

Scanlan was impressive as well, improving her season singles mark to 4-1.  She defeated RWC's Marine Kennel, 6-2, 6-3 for the point in the No. 2 singles position.

But, RWC swept the other four singles matches to maintain control and pick up the win.  The points didn't come without tests from the Wildcats however.  In No. 3 singles, Camilla Linhart defeated Daemen's Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 7-5).  The Wildcats also got solid play from freshman Jessica Robins in the No. 4 singles slot, in a losing effort however, falling to Hamdan, 6-4, 7-5.

Next up for the Wildcats is the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Associatoin (ITA) East Regional tournament this weekend in Philadelphia, Pa.  Daemen returns to dual matches by hosting University of the District of Columbia in ECC action on Friday, September 25.
