AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's tennis team put up quite the fight, but dropped today's non-conference match at home against Clarion University, 7-2.
This match dropped Daemen to 3-4 overall as they remain 1-3 in conference play. Clarion sustains a modest winning streak as they boost to 2-0 overall due to a sweep over Alfred University last week.
Clarion earned an early lead in singles competition as junior
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) fell to Alivia Arnold, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The Wildcats were able to bounce back as junior
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) took down Maria Snyder, 6-2, 7-5. Scanlan improved her season singles mark to 8-2 with today's win. This was followed by another Daemen win as sophomore
Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonowanda) defeated Sarah Robbins, 6-3, 6-0.
Clarion would go on to win the remaining three singles competitions, but not without a fight. The Wildcats had solid play from freshman
Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) as she went into three sets against Jessica Kennelly, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6.
Doubles competition was not Daemen's strong point today as they dropped three matches against Clarion.
Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Jersey City, N.J. to compete against St. Peter's University on Friday, October 2. They will return to ECC competition by traveling to Sparkill, N.Y. to battle against St. Thomas Aquinas College the following day.
