Women's Tennis Falls At Walsh

CANTON, Ohio - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered its second straight defeat to a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent today, falling 9-0 to host Walsh University at the Klekotka Tennis Complex.

The win moves Walsh to 2-2 over their last four dual-matches, and to 3-7 overall on the season.  Daemen, which fell to GLIAC affiliate University of Findlay yesterday by the same score, falls to 4-8 this year.

The Cavaliers opened things up by establishing a 3-0 lead following doubles play, including wins in a pair of competitive matches at first and second doubles.  Senior Sofya Logunova (Prague, Czech Republic) and freshman Mercedes Fernandez (Sevilla, Spain) teamed up on an 8-4 win in the top spot over DC's Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian).  Another senior-freshman tandem, Gabriela Laguna-Leon (Maracaibo Zula, Venezuela) and Victoria Ambrosio (Cordoba, Argentina) won 8-5 over Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda).

Singles play brought the same results as the Cavaliers ended any hopes of a Wildcat comeback.  Hollins played the most competitive match for Daemen, falling in first singles 2-6, 4-6 to Logunova, a first-team All-GLIAC selection last season.

Daemen is on the road again this weekend with an East Coast Conference dual-match at Long Island University Post on Saturday (Oct. 15) followed by a non-conference contest with Caldwell University on Sunday (Oct. 16).
