Wildcats Fall At LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 defeat to Long Island University Post in East Coast Conference play today at the LIU Post Tennis Courts.

The loss, which officially eliminates Daemen from ECC Tournament contention, moves the Wildcats to 4-9 overall and 0-4 in league play this season.  The host Pioneers, meanwhile, stay in the driver's seat for their fourth straight ECC Tournament berth at 4-1 in league play (5-1 overall).

LIU Post established a 3-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches to open up play today.  Stanislava Klymmova (Dnipro, Ukraine) and Shanie Arthur (Brookville, N.Y.) teamed up for an 8-5 win over DC's duo of seniors Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) in first doubles, the most competitive match doubles match of the lot.

Needing to win five of the six singles matchups to steal the victory, Daemen got 40-percent of the way there with points at fifth and sixth singles.  Shaylah Iverson (Canandaigua, N.Y./Naples) downed the Pioneers' Laura Harwell (Alabaster, Ala.) in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), while Delaney Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) pulled out a three-set win (6-2, 2-6, 1-0) over Meagan Byrne (Deer Park, N.Y.).

But, the Pioneers picked up points at first, second, third and fourth singles to seal the win.  Freshman Charlotte Hynes (Weston, Fla.) scored a three-set win over DC's Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda), 6-4, 6-7, 1-0, in fourth singles.  Arthur, the reigning ECC Rookie of the Year, and Lara Scholtze, who was a first-team all-league pick while playing for Chestnut Hill College last season, were singles winners as well today.

Daemen returns to the court tomorrow to face Caldwell University in a non-conference dual-match.
