Daemen Cruises to Non-League Win Over Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 non-conference victory over host Houghton College this afternoon on the Houghton campus. Daemen, which was coming off an impressive win over Cedarville University Friday night, improved to 4-6 on the year. Houghton, a NCAA Division III member, dropped to 6-6. Daemen improved to 4-0 all-time against the Highlanders.

Seniors Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) set the tone for the Wildcats for the second-straight match. The duo posted an 8-3 win over Caroline Phillips (Bexley, Ohio) and Laura Jacuzzo (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) at first doubles, and both went on to straight-set wins in singles play. Hollins improved to 4-6 at No. 1 singles following a 6-0, 6-2 win over Phillips, while Scanlan posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tori Noller (Wellsville, N.Y.) at No. 2 singles. The win improved Scanlan to a team-best 8-4 in singles play this year.

The Wildcats also picked up a point in doubles play from junior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda).  The former high school teammates paired together for third time this season to oust Noller and Toni Kling (Wellsville, N.Y.), 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.

Daemen completed a sweep in doubles play after Shaylah Iverson (Canandaigua, N.Y./Naples) and Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) posted an 8-5 win over Amanda Carl (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) and Courtney Grippo (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) at third doubles. It marked the first time this season Iverson and Park have been paired together.

Daemen prevailed in straight sets in all six singles matches. Ringler improved to 4-6 on the year after defeating Jacuzzo 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Robins defeated Jacquelyn Lewis (Ashland, Ohio) at No. 4 (6-4, 6-1), while Iverson and Park completed the sweep. Iverson downed Carl (6-1, 6-1) at No. 5 and Park defeated Amy Brennfleck (Howell, Mich.) at No. 6 (6-2, 6-4).

The individual wins tonight allowed Scanlan to increase her program record totals in both singles and doubles play.  She's now posted 41 singles wins and 40 doubles wins over her four-year career.

Daemen kicks off a busy week of five matches in the span of seven days on Monday (Oct. 10) when it travels to the University of Findlay for a non-league match.
