WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Tournament Most Valuable Player
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) led the Daemen College women's tennis team to a pair of victories today to capture the team's third-straight championship at the Third Annual Daemen/Medaille Invitational held at Miller Tennis Center this weekend. Daemen, which had blanked its tournament co-host Medaille College 9-0 on Friday night, closed out the tourney with identical 7-2 wins today over Alfred University and Rochester Institute of Technology.
The wins today move Daemen to 8-11 overall this season. It's the Wildcats' third-straight eight-win season after going 8-15 in each of the last two years. Today's results also improve Daemen to 8-0 all-time in this tournament.
Hollins earned MVP honors at the event for the second-straight season. For the tournament, she went undefeated (3-0) in singles play, appearing in the No. 1 singles slot in all three matches and dropping just four total sets. The three individual wins in singles play gives Hollins an 11-6 record this season, pulling her into a tie with
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) for the most singles victories on the team this season (Scanlan is 11-11).
She also went unbeaten in doubles play, teaming with
Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) Friday versus Medaille, and with Scanlan in both matches today.
Joining Hollins on the all-tournament team was her teammate Robins, as well as Medaille's Liz Barrett, Alfred's Emma Jackson and Rachel Cook, and RIT's Gianna Heaviland.
In the win over Alfred, Daemen swept through doubles play. In addition to the Hollins-Scanlan win in the top spot,
Leighanna Hewes and
Gretchen Ringler won in the second slot (8-1), while Robins teamed with veteran
Maria McGrath (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) to win in the third slot (8-2).
Singles victories from Hollins, Ringler, Robins and
Delaney Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) secured the dual-match win.
Moving on to the match with eventual tournament runner-up RIT, it was the doubles pairings of Hollins and Scanlan, and Robins and McGrath getting Daemen off to a 2-1 start. Their second doubles win of the day moved Hollins and Scanlan to 12-7 as a team this season.
Singles wins from Hollins, Scanlan, Ringler, Robins and
Aman Shamaa (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) closed out the Daemen victory.
Daemen continues the spring portion of its 2015-16 schedule by hosting Le Moyne College at Miller Tennis Center on Saturday, February 27.
