AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's tennis team lost on Senior Day to opponent Rochester Institute of Technology 5-4 at the Sweet Home High School Tennis Courts.
Seniors
Aman Shamaa (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and
Maria McGrath (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) played in their final home match of their careers today. Both players were honored in a pre-match ceremony. Shamaa has been a part of the Wildcats since their inaugural season in 2012-13. McGrath has been with the team since the 2013-14 season.
This was the second match between the two teams this season, in which the Wildcats beat the Tigers 7-2 at home in the first, making the series an even 1-1.
Daemen started the day winning two of a possible three points in doubles play.
Juniors
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) teamed up for their 23
rd doubles match this season, sneaking past Tigers' duo of freshman Amelia Ying (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and junior Gianna Heaviland (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito) 9-8. The win put Hollins and Scanlan's record in doubles matches to 14-9.
The tandem of sophomore
Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and freshman
Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) defeated Briana Dimisko (Hyde Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and Alyssa Hering (Albion, N.Y./Kendall) of RIT 9-7 in second doubles.
Daemen would drop the third doubles match, leading 2-1 going into singles action.
The Wildcats and Tigers battled back and forth in singles play, in which the Tigers' prevailed winning four out of six matches. Ying would defeat Hollins 7-6, 6-2 in first singles. Scanlan and Ringler would follow the loss up with wins of their own in second and third singles. Scanlan shutout RIT's Heaviland 6-0, 6-0, and Ringler went on to beat Dimisko 6-3, 6-3.
RIT's Hering, Marie Jubert (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), and Kelsie Redburn (Byram, N.J./Pope John XXIII) bounced back and won slots four through six, giving the Tigers the victory.
Daemen will look to end their four-game skid on the road next Saturday against Ashland University on March 19.
