MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Playing in their 2015-16 season finale, the Daemen College women's tennis suffered a 6-3 defeat this afternoon to Davis & Elkins College at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The loss ends Daemen's season at 8-16 overall in dual matches. Â D&E, the defending Great Midwest Athletic Conference champions, improve to 5-8 overall with their win today.
Daemen broke through with an 8-2 win in first doubles from juniors
Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and
Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) over D&E's Amanda Fewster (Westminster, Md.) and Haileigh Carper to open the match. Â The win gives the DC duo of Hollins and Scanlan a 15-9 record in doubles matches this season.
But, D&E took the remaining two doubles competitions, picking up points from Elise Simon (Fresnoy Le Luat, France) and Kelsie Roby (Petersburg, W. Va.) at second doubles, and from Halima Michael (Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines) and Marlene Ridgway (Buckhannon, W. Va.) at third doubles to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In singles play, Hollins won her first singles matchup with D&E's Simon, 6-4, 6-2. Â Hollins ends the season with a team-best singles mark of 13-9.
Daemen also picked up a singles win from freshman
Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) in the No. 3 slot. Â Robins won handily (6-1, 6-0) over Carper to earn the ninth singles victory of her rookie campaign. Â It was just her fifth appearance of the season in third singles. Â Daemen played without its normal third singles player sophomore
Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) who suffered an injury during warmups today.
D&E secured wins in second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles to seal the dual-match victory.
The result today sealed Daemen's third-straight season with eight victories which remains as the program record for wins in a season since beginning play in 2012-13. Â Â
