AMHERST, N.Y. - Four school records fell as the Daemen College women's outdoor track and field team participated in the closest thing to a home meet its ever had at the University at Buffalo Invitational held today at UB Stadium just three miles from the Daemen campus.
The four new records were all set by freshmen as
Tiffany Cycon (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster),
Sam Carro (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua),
Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y./Alfred-Almond Central) and
Rachel Roberson (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) put their marks on the record book.
Cycon, a sprinter, finished third in the 400 meter dash with a record-breaking time of 1:00.65. The previous mark was 1:02.92 set at last year's East Coast Conference Championships by
Kailyn Szymanski. It's just the latest record-setting performance for Cycon who also presently owns the program's top times in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes.
Carro makes her way to the record book as an individual for the first time in the 100 meter hurdles. She finished seventh in the event today with a time of 16.30 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 17.48 seconds set by Morgan Stefanik at the Rochester Spring Invitational way back on March 30, 2013. Carro is also a member of the program's record-holding 4x100 meter relay team.
Kress eclipsed her own record in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing in third place today with a time of 1:09.23 which was slightly better than the 1:10.30 time she posted at the Westminster Invitational two weeks ago.
Lastly, Roberson's long leap of 5.02 meters set a new benchmark in the long jump as she becomes the first Daemen athlete to clear five meters in the event. It's the second time in the last three meets that Roberson has set a record in the event. She previously set the bar at 4.75 meters at the Westminster Invitational before teammate
Leah May (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) leapt 4.81 meters at last week's conference championship meet.
The meet today, which in addition to the Wildcats and host UB Bulls featured University of Pittsburgh, Niagara University, SUNY Fredonia, University of Guelph and University of Toronto, was not scored for team standings.
Daemen's 2016 season will conclude on May 14 at the Cardinal Last Chance Meet hosted by Saint John Fisher College.
