Women's Tennis Wins Second Straight Season Opener

FAIRMONT, W. Va. - The Daemen College women's tennis team swept through doubles action and took all but one singles match to come away with an 8-1 victory today in their opening match of the 2016-17 season, a non-league contest with Fairmont State University at the FSU Tennis Courts.

The win today was Daemen's second straight in a season opener, and their third in the last four seasons.  It also handed the host Falcons (3-1), an affiliate of the Mountain East Conference, their first setback of the year.  It was just the second meeting ever between the two as Daemen avenged a tough 5-4 defeat in the only previous matchup which came in October of 2014.

Seniors Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) and Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) picked up where they left off last season, winning in first doubles, 8-6, over FSU's Trinite' Klamadji (Niamey, Niger) and Hayley Hatfield (Holden, W. Va.).  The Wildcat duo teamed up for 15 doubles wins last season - a program record as a pair.

The match also marked the return of Shaylah Iverson (Canandaigua, N.Y./Naples) as she teamed with Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) to pick up an 8-6 win in second doubles over Mollee Brown (Fairmont, W. Va.) and Natalia Vasquez (Galena Park, Texas).  Iverson earned 10 doubles wins and 15 singles wins for the Wildcats between 2012-14.

Junior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and sophomore Delaney Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) completed the doubles sweep after gutting out a 9-8 victory over Geena Lammertin (Hobart, Ind.) and Janay Beamer (Painesville, Ohio).

Singles play brought more of the same as Scanlan, Ringler, Robins, Iverson and Fragale earned wins in second through sixth singles.  Only FSU's Klamadji broke through for the Falcons, besting Hollins in first singles, 6-1, 7-6.

The singles win for Scanlan adds to her program record total which now sits at 34 for her career.

Daemen looks to make it a 2-0 weekend when they visit Seton Hill University tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 11) for a 1 p.m. match in the greater Pittsburgh area.
