Wildcats Win Tight One At Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Just one day removed from suffering a gut-wreching one-point defeat, the Daemen College women's tennis team rebounded to earn their own victory by the slimmest of margins, downing host Philadelphia University 5-4 in non-conference action at the Abraham J. Salaman '58 Tennis Courts.

With the match knotted at 4-4, junior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) came up with a three-set win in third singles to clinch the match victory for Daemen.  Ringler ousted PU sophomore Usha Baublitz (New Freedom, Pa.) 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.

The win evened Daemen's overall record at 2-2 this season, while the host Rams, who were picked fourth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference preseason poll, falls to 2-4.

Daemen opened the match by taking two out of three in doubles play.  Ringler teamed with senior Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) for the first time this season, and the duo won 8-5 in second doubles over Baublitz and Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil).  In third doubles, it was Daemen sophomore Delaney Fragale (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and redshirt-senior Shaylah Iverson (Canandaigua, N.Y./Naples) teaming for their first win of the season together, downing Emily Zygmunt (Yardley, Pa.) and Katelyn High (Lancaster, Pa.) 8-3.

That set the stage for singles action where Daemen picked up the requisite three points to earn the victory.  In addition to Ringler, coach Stephen Beatty's squad got wins from sophomore Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Iverson.  Robins took out Sampaio 6-4, 6-1 in fourth singles, earning a win over the Rams' returning leader in singles victories during the 2015-16 season.  Iverson was a 7-5, 6-2 winner in fifth singles over Zygmunt as she moves to 3-1 on the season in singles play.

Ringler, who is now 2-2 in singles play this season, ranks second all-time at Daemen with 24 singles wins in her career to date.

Daemen concludes a string of five consecutive road matches to open the 2016-17 season tomorrow with a 12 p.m. dual match vs. University of the Sciences.
