Women's Tennis Falls In Home Opener

AMHERST, N.Y. - Seniors Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) each earned singles victories, but it wasn't enough to lead the Daemen College women's tennis team past Roberts Wesleyan College today as the visiting Redhawks squeeked by the Wildcats 6-3 in the latter's 2016-17 home opener at the Ellicott Tennis Courts.

The loss today drops Daemen to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in East Coast Conference play this season.  All four of Daemen's losses this season have come by three points or less.  Meanwhile, Roberts Wesleyan evened its overall record (4-4) while picking up its first league win of the season (1-2).

Hollins teamed with sophomore Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) to win 8-5 in first doubles over RWC's Marousia Bosch (Utrecht, Netherlands) and Natalia Cardona (Armenia, Colombia), but the visitors established a one-point lead by winning the two remaining doubles matchups.  That included an ultra-tight 9-8 win in second doubles by Salome Darsalia (Stoney Creek, Ont.) and Tiffany Hamdan (Johnson City, N.Y.) over Daemen's Scanland and Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda).

In singles play, Daemen picked up half of the four wins it needed to clinch the match.  Hollins, a second-team All-ECC pick last season, picked up her first win of the season by downing Bosch 6-2, 6-0 in first singles.  Scanlan, the program's all-time leader in singles wins, upped her career win total to 36 by ousting Hamdan 7-6, 6-2.

RWC got wins in third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles to sew up the dual-match victory.  The most competitive of those matchups came in third singles where Cardona got by Ringler in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 6-1).

The win today moved the Redhawks to 6-0 all-time against Daemen, although the Wildcats have clearly closed the gap in recent meetings.  After being shutout in the teams' first four meetings, the last two have both ended in 6-3 scores.

Daemen enters tournament play for the first time this season at this weekend's Bloomsburg Invitational (Sept. 24-25), before returning to dual-match play by hosting St. Thomas Aquinas College in another ECC meeting on Saturday, Oct. 1.
