Men's Tennis Plays Two Dual Matches This Weekend

Wildcats Host Salem International Friday, Face Hillsdale Saturday In Neutral Site Contest

The Daemen College men's tennis team concludes its spring season-opening three-match home-stand by hosting a non-conference dual match vs. Salem International on Friday evening, and they'll take on Hillsdale College in a neutral site non-league dual match on Sunday afternoon.

ON THE SIDELINES
Stephen Beatty enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wildcats...over the course of his first three seasons, Beatty has guided the Daemen men's tennis team to a 19-49 record...a former collegiate player at Division II Northwood University (Mich.) and Division III D'Youville College, Beatty got his coaching start as an assistant to Kelly Brown, serving for one season - Daemen's inaugural season of tennis competition - before being promoted to the top post.
   
DAEMEN GROUND STROKES (1-6, 0-0 ECC)
Daemen returns 11 players from last year's team that finished 5-17 overall and 0-5 in the East Coast Conference...gone is familiar face Gregory Lowe who was lost to graduation, leaving as the program's all-time leader in singles victories (32), total singles matches (77), singles winning percentage (.427), doubles victories (30), total doubles matches (77) and doubles winning percentage (.400)...among the returners is Mark Veitengruber who opened his junior season just eight singles wins why of breaking Lowe's program record...Veitengruber went 13-16 in singles play last season, establishing a new team record for singles wins in a season...also, senior John LeMar returns and he sits just nine doubles wins shy of breaking Lowe's program record at the season's outset...the Wildcats also return sophomore David Gonzalez Villegas who went 6-9 in singles and 7-10 in doubles last season...his season was interrupted by an injury at the end of the fall season, but his return to the lineup late in the spring coincided with Daemen winning three of their final five dual matches of the season...Daemen opened the 2016-17 season last fall with a pair of dual match losses to Fairmont State (9-0) and Division I Niagara (8-1) before jumping into the win column with a 7-2 defeat of Division III Houghton...the Wildcats closed out the fall season with a pair of road losses in mid-October, falling at Findlay (8-1) and Walsh (8-1)...the fall season also featured the Daemen Invitational, a four-team event which ran from Oct. 1-4...Veitengruber teamed with sophomore Justin Milner to claim the championship of the "A" doubles braket in the tournament...the duo has posted a 4-4 record together to lead the team in doubles wins thus far...Daemen opened the spring portion of its 2016-17 schedule with identical 8-1 defeats to West Virginia Wesleyan and Mercyhurst in early February....LeMar is 3-3 in singles play to lead the team...Veitengruber, Gonzalez Villegas and freshman Fabian Wilde have all posted two singles wins this season...Gonzalez Villegas teamed with newcomer Ricardo Ruiz Martinez in doubles play to pick up the team's lone point in the loss to West Virginia Wesleyan...Ruiz Martinez picked up a singles win vs. Mercyhurst, knocking off 2015-16 All-PSAC selection Joaquin Aguilera...the Wildcats were picked sixth in the ECC preseason poll.
   
SALEM INTERNATIONAL GROUND STROKES (2-1)
Salem International is located in Salem, W. Va. and the Tigers are independent members of NCAA Division II...the SIU tennis program is led by interim head coach Florin Marton, and the program is in just its second year of existence...after going 2-21 in their inaugural season (2015-16), the Tigers have already matched that win total this year...they defeated West Virginia State 7-2 last September in the team's only action of the fall season...since opening the spring campaign, SIU has added a 6-3 defeat of Division III Elmira, while their lone loss of the season came to East Coast Conference member Roberts Wesleyan (9-0)...sophomores Chrisitan Manalang and Landon Schultz-Zwahr, both Texas natives, return to the Tigers after teaming up for a team-leading six doubles wins last season...Manalang also led the team in singles wins with four.

HILLSDALE GROUND STROKES (1-2, 0-0 GLIAC)
The program at Hillsdale returned last season after more than a decade hiatus...the Chargers are located in Hillsdale, Mich. and are members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference...HC is led by head coach Keith Turner who led the team to a 6-11 overall record (1-8 GLIAC) in its return last season...the Chargers return four of the six players that made up their roster in 2015-16, including second-team All-GLIAC selection Justin Hyman and honorable-mention All-GLIAC selection Dugan Delp...HC dropped a 5-4 dual match to NAIA member Lawrence Tech in their only head-to-head action of the fall season...after opening the spring campaign with a 9-0 shutout victory over Cedarville, the Chargers fell 6-3 at Lewis earlier this week...HC takes on Mercyhurst Saturday before facing Daemen on Sunday afternoon.
