Wildcats Knock Off Defending GMAC Champs

Daemen Ties Team Record For Wins In A Season

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team opened a three-match weekend by defeating Davis & Elkins College 6-3 in a non-conference dual match at Miller Tennis Center this evening.

The win is Daemen's second straight and it came against the defending Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champions.  It also avenges a 6-3 loss in the first-ever meeting between these two teams last season.  Coach Stephen Beatty's team is now 8-11 this season, tying the team record for wins in a season.  The Wildcats have finished with eight wins in each of the last three seasons, and will now have five matches to try to eclipse the mark.

Davis & Elkins falls to 1-2 this season with tonight's defeat.

Seniors Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) and Shaylah Iverson (Canandaigua, N.Y./Naples), and junior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) were all double-point producers for Daemen tonight.  Scanlan teamed with Ringler to rout the Senators' Haileigh Carper (Baltimore, Md.) and Amanda Fewster (Westminster, Md.) 8-1 in second doubles.  In third doubles, it was Iverson picking up the win with teammate Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) as they bested Kelsie Roby (Petersburg, W. Va.) and Kalee Sherrard (Berkley Springs, W. Va.) by an 8-5 final.

In singles play, Scanlan, Ringler and Iverson were victorious in the second, third and fifth positions, respectively.  Scanlan took down D&E sophomore Elise Simon (Fresnoy Le Luat, France), a first-team All-GMAC selection last season, in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).  Ringler won 6-1, 6-3 over Fewster, and Iverson bested Carper 7-6, 6-1.

Daemen sophomore Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) picked up her 10th singles win of the season as well, knocking off another All-GMAC player in Roby, 6-4, 6-3.  Robins remains third on the team this season in singles victories behind Scanlan (12) and Iverson (11).

Scanlan's wins tonight extend her program record totals in both singles and doubles play.  The senior standout now has 45 singles wins and 44 doubles wins in her four-year career.

Daemen is now 2-0 this spring, and 6-5 since Oct. 7.  Tonight's match marked the eighth this season that has been decided by three points or fewer (3-5 record in those matches).

The Wildcats return to action Saturday (Feb. 25) afternoon when they visit Le Moyne College for another non-conference dual match.
