Daemen Hosts Mercyhurst On Super Bowl Sunday

ON THE SIDELINES
Stephen Beatty enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wildcats...over the course of his first three seasons, Beatty has guided the Daemen men's tennis team to a 19-49 record...a former collegiate player at Division II Northwood University (Mich.) and Division III D'Youville College, Beatty got his coaching start as an assistant to Kelly Brown, serving for one season - Daemen's inaugural season of tennis competition - before being promoted to the top post.
   
DAEMEN SCOUTING REPORT (1-5, 0-0 ECC)
Daemen returns 11 players from last year's team that finished 5-17 overall and 0-5 in the East Coast Conference...gone is familiar face Gregory Lowe who was lost to graduation, leaving as the program's all-time leader in singles victories (32), total singles matches (77), singles winning percentage (.427), doubles victories (30), total doubles matches (77) and doubles winning percentage (.400)...among the returners is Mark Veitengruber who opened his junior season just eight singles wins why of breaking Lowe's program record...Veitengruber went 13-16 in singles play last season, establishing a new team record for singles wins in a season...also, senior John LeMar returns and he sits just nine doubles wins shy of breaking Lowe's program record at the season's outset...the Wildcats also return sophomore David Gonzalez Villegas who went 6-9 in singles and 7-10 in doubles last season...his season was interrupted by an injury at the end of the fall season, but his return to the lineup late in the spring coincided with Daemen winning three of their final five dual-matches of the season...Daemen opened the 2016-17 season last fall with a pair of dual-match losses to Fairmont State (9-0) and Division I Niagara (8-1) before jumping into the win column with a 7-2 defeat of Division III Houghton...the Wildcats closed out the fall season with a pair of road losses in mid-October, falling at Findlay (8-1) and Walsh (8-1)...the fall season also featured the Daemen Invitational, a four-team event which ran from Oct. 1-4...Veitengruber teamed with sophomore Justin Milner to claim the championship of the "A" doubles braket in the tournament...the duo has posted a 4-3 record together to lead the team in doubles wins thus far...Daemen opened the spring portion of its 2016-17 schedule with an 8-1 loss to Mountain East Conference powerhouse West Virginia Wesleyan at Miller Tennis Center on Friday evening....LeMar is 3-3 in singles play to lead the team...Veitengruber, Gonzalez Villegas and freshman Fabian Wilde all posted two singles wins during the fall season as well...Gonzalez Villegas teamed with newcomer Ricardo Ruiz Martinez in doubles play to pick up the team's lone point in the loss to West Virginia Wesleyan...the Wildcats were picked sixth in the ECC preseason poll.
   
MERCYHURST SCOUTING REPORT (1-0, 0-0 PSAC)
Mercyhurst is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference...head coach Jerome Simon, now in his sixth season, brings back three players who earned first-team All-PSAC honors last season while leading the Lakers to an 11-9 overall record...Joaquin Aguilera (13-11), Conor McCooey (12-8) and Nenad Terzic (16-9) all posted double-figure singles victories last season...Mercyhurst fell in the PSAC Tournament finals to Edinboro last season, but earned an at-large bid to the Atlantic Regional portion of the NCAA Tournament where they defeated West Liberty in the opening round before being bounced by Edinboro...it was the Lakers' second straight season with an NCAA Tournament bid...Mercyhurst played just one dual-match during the fall season, blanking Division III Allegheny 9-0...the remainder of the fall season had the Lakers competing in tournament play...Aguilera and Terzic teamed up to win the doubles final at the PSAC Singles/Doubles Championships in early October...Sunday's match marks Mercyhurst's first action of the spring season...freshman Arseniy Sklyarov, a native of Toronto, has made an immediate impact as he leads the team in singles wins with a 6-4 mark...Aguilera is 4-4 in singles play, while Terzic (3-3), McCooey (3-1) and freshman Sebastian Pardo (3-0) have three singles wins apiece...on the strength of their tournament win, the duo of Aguilera and Terzic is 7-3 in doubles play thus far.
