Wildcats Cap Season With Loss To Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Daemen College women's tennis team closed out its 2016-17 season with a 9-0 loss to host Bellarmine University here today.

Daemen closed out the year with an overall record of 9-15 and a 1-6 mark in the East Coast Conference. The nine wins are the most in one season for the Wildcats since the program's inception in 2012-13. Bellarmine, which has now won seven-straight matches, improved to 11-2. The Knights are a member of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference and were voted third in the GLVC East Division preseason poll.

The Knights opened the match by winning all three doubles matchups. Daemen seniors Karli Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y./SUNY Geneseo) and Hayle Scanlan (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) put up a fight at No. 1 doubles, before suffering an 8-4 setback to sophomore Maggie Walroth (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Ashley Jonathan (Westfield, Ind.). The win improved Walroth and Jonathan to 14-6 in doubles play this year. Meanwhile, Hollins and Scanlon closed out their careers with 26 doubles victories. Individually, Scanlan ranks first in team history with 46 doubles wins, while Hollins ranks second with 30.

On the second doubles court, freshman Jennifer Skonieczny (Cedarburg, Wisc.) and senior Sydney Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) posted an 8-2 win for the hosts over junior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and sophomore Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda).

BU secured the win with straight-set wins in all six singles matches. Scanlan and Skonieczny turned in the most competitive match at No. 2 singles, with Skonieczny posting a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Scanlon, who set the program record for singles wins in a season (14) during a match at the University of Southern Indiana yesterday, closes out her four-year career with the program record for singles wins in a career (47) as well. Hollins, a three-year member of the program after transferring from SUNY Geneseo, finishes ied for third in career singles wins with 27. It also marked the final career match for senior Shaylah Iverson (Canadaigua, N.Y./Naples), who was a member of the program's first-ever team in 2012-13 and finished tied with Hollins for third in career singles wins (27).
