Wildcats Return To Action Tuesday At Roberts Wesleyan

The Daemen College men's tennis team competes for the first time since April 2 when it travels to Rochester Tuesday to face rival Roberts Wesleyan College...the match marks the first of three East Coast Conference tilts in this, the final week of the 2016-17 regular season.

ON THE SIDELINES
Stephen Beatty enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Wildcats...over the course of his first three seasons, Beatty has guided the Daemen men's tennis team to a 19-49 record...a former collegiate player at Division II Northwood University (Mich.) and Division III D'Youville College, Beatty got his coaching start as an assistant to Kelly Brown, serving for one season - Daemen's inaugural season of tennis competition - before being promoted to the top post.
   
DAEMEN GROUND STROKES (6-15, 0-2 ECC)
Daemen has rebounded from a slow start to win four of its last eight dual matches, two of which have come by shutout...with six wins this season, the Wildcats have surpassed their win total from all of the 2015-16 season when they went 5-17 overall, and moved within one win of tying the team record for wins in a season...the recent stretch of solid play began with a 9-0 shutout victory over Millersville on Mar. 5...in the win, senior John LeMar picked up the 31st doubles win of his career to become the program's all-time leader...freshman Fabian Wilde won in both singles and doubles against Millersville, and was subsequently named the ECC Rookie of the Week for matches played Feb. 27 through Mar. 5...the Wildcats followed up with back-to-back wins over Franklin (9-0) and Earlham (5-4)...after falling to ECC-favorite NYIT on April 1, the Wildcats earned a 7-2 non-league win at Caldwell in their last outing (April 2)...in a March loss to District of Columbia, junior Mark Veitengruber earned the 33rd singles win of his career, breaking the program record set by Gregory Lowe from 2012-16...Veitengruber, who set the program record for singles in in a season last year with 13, shares the team lead in singles wins this season with nine...also with nine singles wins is sophomore Ricardo Ruiz Martinez...he has come on strong  in the last several weeks, and he'll enter Tuesday's contest having won four-straight singles matches...in doubles play, Ruiz Martinez has teamed with classmate David Gonzalez Villegas to go 8-5, and they are winners of three-straight...individually, Gonzalez Villegas leads the team with 12 doubles wins, breaking the program record for doubles wins in a season...the Wildcats were picked sixth in the ECC preseason poll.
   
ROBERTS WESLEYAN GROUND STROKES (12-10, 0-2 ECC)
RWC is led by veteran head coach Tom Linhart who has guided the Redhawks to over 80 wins in his tenure, while also collecting ECC Coach of the Year honors in 2014...the Redhawks return four players from their 2015-16 team which went 11-12 overall and 1-4 in ECC play...RWC's top returner is junior Dustin Eshelman who went 10-6 in singles play and 8-5 in doubles play last season...it's been a tale of two seasons for RWC, which was picked fourth in the ECC preseason poll...the Redhawks rattled off eight-straight wins to open the season, finishing the fall campaign at 8-1...wins have been harder to come by this spring with the team going just 4-9, including a 1-6 mark since mid-March...the Redhawks snapped a six-match slide with a 7-2 win over Caldwell on April 8...recent losses have come in conference play to NYIT (6-3) and District of Columbia (7-2).
